Just 5.7 Million people tuned in to watch the special, the least watched Christmas episode ever. Official rating will be released in due course.

Christmas 2005 - The Christmas Invasion: 9.84 Million
Christmas 2006 - The Runaway Bride: 9.35 Million
Christmas 2007 - Voyage of The Damned: 13.31 Million (Also the most watched DW episode since 2005)
Christmas 2008 - The Next Doctor: 13.10 Million
Christmas 2009 - The End of Time Part 1: 12.04 Million
New Years Day 2010 - The End of Time Part 2: 12.27 Million
Christmas 2010 - A Christmas Carol: 12.11 Million
Christmas 2011 - The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe: 10.77 Million
Christmas 2012 - The Snowmen: 9.87 Million
Christmas 2013 - The Time Of The Doctor: 11.14 Million
Christmas 2014 - Last Christmas: 8.28 Million
Christmas 2015 - The Husbands of River Song: 7.69 Million

The Overnight rating is the same as Husbands of RS (5.8) and bearing in mind that ratings magnets Bake Off, Strictly and Mrs Brown got 6.1 its not tragic at all. I predict that it should get ~2M on catch-up so probably the same rating as last year

Ashley. 26-12-2016 06:03 PM

Voyage of the Damned's high rating was thanks to Kylie Minogue... The Next Doctor was heavily promoted, and The End of Time exceeded for obvious reasons so I don't think they'd work well as comparisons.

I'd agree with Pete, an official rating of 7 million sounds fairly reasonable these days.

I've decided that Sarah Jane, Martha, Barbara, Tegan and Rose are the holy top 5 and in that order

But where is legend Ace?

Pete. 28-12-2016 06:43 PM

Actually I'm going to rank all the companions because I'm interested as who's bottom

Not Martha

Tom4784 28-12-2016 07:10 PM

Rose 2.0 was trash.

Tom4784 28-12-2016 07:11 PM

Actually she wasn't that bad, it's just we needed something different after Rose and we got more of the same pretty much </3

armand.kay 28-12-2016 07:25 PM

Martha is so underrated she literally saved the entire world from the master in her own, without the doctor.

armand.kay 28-12-2016 07:28 PM

In fact Martha did quite a lot on her own while the doctor was incapable of helping out. Martha is an awesome companion and I think her story is quite inspiring.

She was good in her own right but her problem is that she was a lovesick companion that came right after Rose.

I'd appreciate Martha more if we had a different kind of companion first.

Marsh. 28-12-2016 07:33 PM

Plus she was played by a terribly wooden actress which loses her points.

It's quite telling the most popular episode of series 3 gave her about 30 seconds screen time.

The Rose-free series 2 episode was hated and the Donna centric series 4 episode is one of the most popular.

Martha just isn't worthy to lick their boots.

Yeah but that episode would have been just as dire either way to be fair

Oaker 28-12-2016 07:42 PM

I mean Midnight is probably the most popular episode of series 4, yet Donna is only in it for 5 seconds - does that mean Donna was hated? no

It's not though is it? :hee:

Pete. 28-12-2016 07:53 PM

RTD wrote Martha awfully he even wanted to kill her in Journey's End initally. Apart from the stupid unrequited love story, she grows throughout the series and carries Human Nature/Family of Blood/Last of the Time Lords which I couldn't see Rose and Donna doing in my opinion.

Freema isn't wooden at all just watch all her other stuff (Law and Order) to see that

Not understanding the Blink, Turn Left and Love & Monsters comparison when they're both ends of the DW spectrum and they learnt from the mistakes of L&M on how to do a Doctor-Lite episode properly. It doesn't show that Rose was adored when Jackie was equally liked but she featured heavily.

Tom4784 28-12-2016 08:14 PM

Ew, I had forgotten that the Peter Kay episode existed and was happy in my ignorant bliss.
