EastEnders stars were busy celebrating last night after Daily Star readers hailed their show Britain’s best soap.

Walford legend Barbara Windsor, who plays Queen Vic landlady Peggy Mitchell, accepted the award on behalf of the cast.

And the star said it topped off an impressive year for the BBC’s flagship show after the Christmas Day episode, which pulled in 14.3million viewers, was crowned best show of 2007.

Barbara, 70, cheered: “This is fantastic news and everyone is so thrilled that the Daily Star’s readers are enjoying what we do.”

And she admitted the success is all down to team spirit off screen as well as on, adding: “We just have the most amazing atmosphere back stage at the moment.

“There’s a real unity and I think that has a lot to do with our new boss, Diederick Santer.

“He’s stabilised the show and there have been no upsets as everyone is pulling together as a team – both on and off screen.

“We don’t do comedy like our rivals on Corrie or Emmerdale and we do take a bit of stick for being a bit depressing. But the fact is that what we do is real life.

“It’s gritty stuff and you only have to pick up the papers to see that there are some hard times being had at the moment.”

Barbara had even more reason to celebrate as her on-screen niece Samantha Janus, 35, won best newcomer for her role as Ronnie Mitchell.

And hunk Rob Kazinsky admitted he was also feeling pretty pleased with himself as readers voted him both best actor and sexiest male.

Rob, 24, laughed: “This has made me slightly smug, I have to say.

“I think there are others more deserving of this, especially Jake Wood, who I have learned so much from. And while he’s still acting, I don’t deserve this award.

“But it is wonderful and I am honoured that people voted for me.”

Corrie also walked away with an armful of gongs as former pop babe Kym Ryder, 31, was named best actress for her role as Michelle Connor.

She told us: “Thanks to everyone who voted for me, I’m absolutely delighted.

“Big up, the Daily Star!”

Alison King, 34, who plays Carla Connor, picked up best bitch, while Street troublemaker David Platt – played by Jack P Shepherd, 20, won best bad boy.

Alison laughed: “I’d like to thank all the Daily Star readers for voting for me.

“I love playing Carla. It’s great to play such a feisty, fun character. She has had her fair share of bitchy moments and I’m sure there’s more to come.”

Over in the Dales, Roxanne Pallett, 25, proved she is the best babe in the business as she took home the sexiest female award.

Roxanne told us: “A huge thank you to all the Daily Star readers, I’m really flattered to be voted as the Sexiest Female because I just don’t see myself as being sexy at all, so this is a huge compliment to start the new year off... thank you!”

And the Dingle clan scooped up the best family award for the second year in a row.

Collecting the gong for the clan, James Hooton, 34, who plays Sam, said: “On behalf of the Dingle family I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the Daily Star readers who voted for us.

“We always say that it’s the best soap family to be part of and we do have a brilliant time working together.

“It’s great to get some recognition and there will be a load in store for the Dingles in 2008.”

AND THE WINNERS ARE...

BEST SOAP - EastEnders
BEST ACTOR - Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders)
BEST ACTRESS - Kym Ryder (Corrie)
BEST BITCH - Alison King (Corrie)
BEST BAD BOY - Jack P Shepherd (Corrie)
SEXIEST FEMALE - Roxanne Pallett (Emmerdale)
SEXIEST MALE - Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders)
BEST NEWCOMER - Samantha Janus (EastEnders)
BEST FAMILY - Dingles (Emmerdale)

[spoil]CHEATED Tanya Branning will shock East-Enders fans by burying ALIVE hubby Max.

The mum of three, played by actress Jo Joyner, takes revenge — in an stunning storyline — for the love-rat bedding his daughter-in-law.

Weeks of scheming will culminate in Tanya seducing Max and then drugging him — before placing him in a coffin and burying it in woods.

Bosses of the BBC soap are certain to come under fire for showing the scenes, which will go out at Easter, before the 9pm watershed.

Lovers ... Max bedded son's girl, Stacey

The moment Max (Jake Wood) had his affair with Stacey (Lacey Turner) uncovered attracted 14 million viewers on Christmas Day — the highest ratings of 2007.

A BBC source added: “Viewers will have to wait to find out whether Max lives or dies.”

The couple’s relationship will nosedive as they battle over custody of their children.

Jo, 29, said: “Tanya is worried Max could take the kids.

“He’s capable of being nasty to get what he wants. He disgusts Tanya, she doesn’t want him back — and feels he is out to hurt her because of that.”

Max is appalled when Tanya’s drug-addict sister Rainey moves in with his family — and he reports his wife to social services.

He claims the kids — Abi, Lauren and baby Oscar — are at risk from dirty needles.

Meanwhile, Stacey tries to rebuild her shattered marriage to Max’s son Bradley

LOVEABLE widower Charlie Slater looks set for some saucy action after Mo Harris puts an advert in the local paper’s lonely-hearts column.

Scheming Big Mo decides it’s about time Charlie found someone to spend his retirement years with.

And she thinks the best way to help him is to go behind his back and put an advert in the Walford Gazette.

But sadly for the meddling mother-in-law things don’t exactly go to plan.

And poor old Charlie is nowhere nearer to finding a companion than he was before her efforts.

An EastEnders insider said: “Let’s just say that none of the candidates that Big Mo lines up are suitable.

“She tries her best and her heart is in the right place.

“But things just don’t work out as she’d planned. One of the lonely hearts turns out to be a rather saucy granny.

“Charlie sees the funny side of it all and it makes him realise that maybe he could do with a companion.

“He lives for his family but it’s about time he started thinking about himself.

“Mo may not have succeeded in her venture but it leads to a new lease of life for old Charlie.

He’s a popular character and has got some good storylines coming up later this year.”

The mild-mannered cabbie moved into Albert Square with the rest of the Slater clan back in 2000.

And apart from having his eye on landlady Peggy Mitchell when he first arrived he’s had no love interest ever since.

Our insider added: “Charlie’s wife Viv died from a stroke just before the Slater family moved to Walford. It’s taken him a while but he feels he’s finally ready to move on.

“Charlie deserves to find himself a companion in his old age especially after all the grief his girls have given him over the years.

“And they would all be totally behind him going for it.”

Viewers of the hit BBC1 soap will be able to watch the lonely hearts storyline unfold later this month.

If that does happen then thats pathetic. Tanya wouldnt do it, its too unbelievable

The BBC is examining whether to have bigger credits at the end of programmes after complaints that the names of cast and crew were too small to read.

The BBC's current system, brought in last year, scrunches the credits into a box in the corner of the screen to accommodate promotional messages.

"Some people have said that the font is too small to read," a statement from the corporation said.

It added: "We are currently looking to enlarge it."

But the BBC said most viewers "make viewing choices while credits roll and value some information on the relevant viewing options available to them across the BBC portfolio".

Loved tonight's episode. I love the rivalry between Chelsea and Clare. Stacey shouldn't bought that bankrupt stock though, no doubt she'll be in trouble for it. Poor Gary as well though, he hasn't done anything wrong and that Minty is putting all the blame on him, at least Heather took him in though. Funny how Heather claimed to be Hazel at the end too, she makes me laugh.
