I don't think they explained in detail why the Doctor chose the face of a Roman guy from Pompeii when Capaldi took over.

They actually did, I think it was something to do with Donna forcing him to save him in the Pompeii episode. Can't remember the full explanation tho

If they got a black gal it would reignite interest in the show so Kris Marshall would be an awful choice. It'll be cancelled in two years bookmark me.
