The Butterfly Effect
PART 2
Gary: WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS!?
She screamed at Zee and Lili. They jumped out their seats and looked at her with surprised expressions.
Lili: Oh my god, I-I can explain!
Gary: What? There was a strong gust of wind and you fell on him? HE'S TWO MONTHS YOUNGER THEN ME! God! I feel sick....Oh my god....
Gary remembered what she heard.
Gary: You're...You're pregnant.....
She felt dizzy.
Zee: Gary, I'm....
Gary: DON'T TALK TO ME! You were my friend and this was going on behind my back....I hate you.
It was overwhelming, The Dizziness increased.
Lili: Gary Don't -
Gary: This is so fucked up. You're pregnant, What's gonna happen now?
Lili: I don't know, We need to talk this through.
Gary: No...there's nothing to talk about. This ends here, Get out Zee or I'll throw you out.
Zee: Wait-
Gary: GET OUT! GET OUT!
She grabbed Zee's chair and pulled him to the door.
Lili: Stop! Please!
Gary: No, I'm ending this, we're getting rid of the baby and you're NEVER seeing him again.
Lili: BUT I LOVE HIM!!!
she screamed in an over dramatic fashion. Gary and Zee were stopped in their tracks, shocked at Lili's admission.
----------
Nathan arrived at Jen's house perfectly on time, He was going to take Jen to a local restaurant. It wasn't flashy but it wasn't a dive but it had good food and a nice atmosphere, perfect for a first date. When Jen opened the door Nathan's mouth dropped open.
If truth be told Jen was a bit of a tomboy, she didn't really care for fashion and generally just wore what she was comfortable in. Tonight however was different, She carefully picked out her outfit and spent ages on her hair and make-up and it was worth it to see Nathan's shocked expression. Recovering from the shock Nathan smiled at her with that goofy grin.
Nathan: You look beautiful
He said shyly.
Jen: Thanks, shall we get going?
Nothing much was said in the car so Nathan decided to plug the silence with music and Lionel Ritchie was soon blasting out. Jen grimaced and Nathan noticed.
Nathan: Oh Yeah, you're not a fan of Lionel aren't you? Oh well, it's a good thing I brought backup!
He changed the CDs and the songs of Bob Dylan played out in the car. Jen could tell Nathan wasn't really a fan but she thought it was sweet how he played it anyway.
Jen: You know what, Lionel's okay.
She changed it back to Lionel Ritchie and played the first track, 'All Night Long' began and they laughed awkwardly. 'Maybe this wouldn't be as bad as I thought' Jen pondered, she felt a bit guilty for writing him off before and even more so for why she went out with him in the first place.
When they arrived at the restaurant it was surprisingly busy, Nathan blanched a little before regaining his confidence. He didn't book any reservations as he was sure they wouldn't be that busy, he hoped there were some tables left otherwise he'd look like an idiot.... As they walked into the Restaurant they saw that from what they could see it was packed. Nathan walked up to the person on the front desk. The man saw them coming, he subtly rolled his eyes before adopting a friendlier attitude.
Remy: Bonjour! I am Remy and I shall be your 'ost for ze night! What can I do for you Monsieur?
Nathan: Can I have a table for two please?
Remy: Ah, I regret to inform you but ze last table for two was taken a few minutes ago. We 'ave a table for four available but zat will cost double I'm afraid due to it being in ze V.I.P area.
Nathan: Oh.....
He only had enough for a normal table, 'Why the hell didn't I make a reservation?!' he thought to himself. Jen quietly sighed, it looked like she overestimated him after all.
Lemonjam: We could double up if you like?
Lemonjam had just arrived with his date GypsyGoth, he had also 'forgotten' to reserve a table. He smiled at Jen, 'You're not the only one who can play the Jealousy game' He thought.
Remy: Ah! Tres Bien! Come right this way Monsieurs et Mademoiselles!
He lead them to the back of the restaurant which was roped off and considerably nicer then the rest. Before they could order the ambulance and police cars drove past the restaurant with the sirens blaring, All four of them wondered what happened briefly before carrying on with ordering.
Remy: Sacre Bleu! I haven't seen that many flashing lights since since I gave up ze Ketamine!
Jen ignored him, she just realised how awkward this night had just become.....
----------
Gary: This can't be happening.
She had calmed down but she was still furious with Zee and Lili, after Lili's admission Gary had run to her room and locked herself in. She couldn't handle it all, it was too much.
Lili: Gary? We need to talk, please come out.
She said softly. Gary wiped her eyes and breathed in and out slowly. She couldn't stay in her room forever. She opened the door to see Lili looking incredibly concerned, she felt her anger return but she kept her cool. They returned to the living room, Gary was surprised to see Zee still here.
Gary: What the hell is he still doing here!
Zee: I'm a part of this, So I'm gonna stay until we sort this out.
Gary: There's nothing to sort out, you two are gonna stop seeing each other. That's it.
Zee: Oh yeah and what about the baby?
Gary: Do I need to spell it out?
Gary said quietly. Lili shook her head involuntarily at this to which Gary noticed.
Gary: What's the plan then Mom? Are you gonna stay together and raise that baby with Daddy Dead Legs over there?
Lili: GARY!
Zee looked away, he was used to jibes about his condition but it hurt hearing it from somebody he considered a friend.
Gary: I'm being realistic! It's not going to work.
Zee: I'll make it work.
Gary laughed cruelly at Zee
Gary: Okay then.
She got up and walked over to the phone.
Gary: If you want to be a big ol' happy family then we have to tell Wombai now don't we?
Zee: No, please don't!
Gary: If you go ahead with this I will tell everyone, your lives will be a living hell.
Lili: Why are you doing this to me?
Gary: WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME?!
Lili: Please Gary, think about what you're saying....
Gary wasn't listening, she had enough of all this. She grabbed her keys and stormed out the house. Lili and Zee called after her but she didn't give them a second thought. She heard the sirens in the distance but her mind was too preoccupied to care.
----------
HALF AN HOUR EARLIER
Shaun had just finished her Pilate's class when she was nearly ran over on her way back home by a speeding driver in a van. She shouted a bunch of obscenities at the driver before realizing it was Patrick. She pondered for a moment what he was up to as she knew he lived in a different area in the town. She guessed from the direction he was heading that he was going to Dezzy's probably to drop off a late article or something she assumed. She continued on walking but she felt a strange feeling that she was missing something. She checked her person but she hadn't dropped or forgotten anything at the class but the feeling in her gut persisted. She looked back at where Patrick nearly ran over but nothing was there. 'Wait...Patrick?' she thought, she was sure she had forgotten something important, could it have been related to him?.
The answer licked in her head without warning and she cast her mind back to that lesson weeks ago when she was partnered with Patrick, that creepy photo....She had seen it before, it was a Tutor Group photo....She had seen it before because her friend Dezzy was in that group......she felt a cold shock when she realised that it was his face missing from the photograph. Shaun turned around and headed for Dezzy's. It might be nothing and she might look like a fool for being wrong but she didn't want to regret not doing anything if she was right.
----------
Dezzy had just finished watching a program on TV when he looked over at the unfinished article on his laptop, He'd been trying to finish it since he got back but he just couldn't find the right words so instead he decided to watch TV. He trudged his bed and attempted to type but he just couldn't concentrate. He decided to fix himself a snack, he left his bedroom walked onto the landing of the second floor of his house. It was dark, Dezzy had been in his room since he got back and his parents were on a business trip so no one had turned on the lights. Dezzy didn't like his house at night, especially in the dark as the light from the street lamps outside would cast weird shapes and shadows within the house. He had lost count of how many times he jumped because he thought he saw something that turned out to be nothing but a shadow caused by the odd lamp.
As he descended down the stairs he heard heavy breathing and felt guilty, he had forgotten about his pet dog Max, the poor thing must be gasping for something to eat and a run around in the garden. As he headed for the kitchen he passed the open living room door and jumped as he thought he saw something moving in the corner of his eye from within the room. 'Not again Dezzy, stop trying to scare yourself there's nothing there' he shut the door without taking any time to look inside. When he got to the kitchen he opened a door that lead off from the kitchen, his dog max came barreling out happily. Dezzy made a fuss of him for a while before making himself a quick sandwich. After he finished, he served up Max's dinner and returned to his bedroom. He passed the living room and closed the door out of habit, upon doing this he had a strange feeling of Deja Vu but he ignored it.
He had just finished the article and went to play on his Xbox when he heard a crash from downstairs. He groaned.
Dezzy: What has he broken now?
He walked through the still dark house, his dog had wreaked havoc with his waterbowl it seemed as the floor of the corridor leading to the kitchen was soaking. He turned on the kitchen light and saw that the floor was covered in the remains of a broken pot. He sighed before grabbing a bin bag, as he knelt down to pick up the pieces when the kitchen light went out.
Dezzy: Not now...
He stood up and went to grab a spare lightbulb when he felt something heavy hit him in the face. He was knocked back but managed to grab whatever had been thrown at him. It was a bit heavy and furry and soaking wet.... Wait...
The light switched back on and Dezzy screamed and jumped back as he realised that he was holding the bloody corpse of his dog.
Patrick: I'm not a fan of dogs.
Dezzy looked at the hallway to see Patrick standing there, he looked deranged. There were bloody footprints on the kitchen floor leading to where Dezzy stood, he realised the grim truth that it wasn't water he was treading in when he walked down the hallway. Before he could say anything Patrick charged at him with a bloody knife raised. Patrick slashed at him and Dezzy felt the blade cut into his cheek. He cried out in anger and ran to the opposite side of the kitchen counter. Patrick swayed at the other end laughing, Dezzy had trapped himself.
Patrick: Whatcha gonna do now Dezzy?
He taunted.
Once again he didn't give Dezzy a chance to answer as he leaped over the counter and aimed a stab towards Dezzy's throat. Dezzy managed to leap out the way as Patrick connected with a cupboard.
Patrick: Oof!
Dezzy got back on his feet and ran for to the hallway , he looked back to see that Patrick had a bloody nose, Patrick screamed out in fury and gave chase. Dezzy ran straight for the door but he realised it was locked and that his keys were in his bedroom.
Dezzy GODAMNIT!
He ran up a few stairs when he felt Patrick's hand grab his ankle. He fell and hit his head on a step. He tried to grab hold of the railings to regain balance but Patrick had an iron grip on his foot. He turned around to see Patrick grinning at him madly, his knife positioned at Dezzy's Achilles Tendon.
Dezzy: No!
With his free foot he aimed a kick at Patrick's stomach which caused him to double over. He got back to his feet and ran up the stairs but within milliseconds he heard Patrick right behind him. He ducked as he saw Patrick going in for a stab in a nearby mirror and then pushed him against the railings when he missed.
Patrick was getting more furious and unhinged by the second, every failed attempt just gave him more drive to tear Dezzy apart. When Dezzy reached the top of the stairs he grabbed an ornament from the side and threw it at Patrick, Patrick saw it coming though and grabbed it out the air and laughed. He threw it back but Dezzy ran to the side and it hit the mirror. Dezzy didn't see the destruction as he bolted into his bedroom and shut the door. Patrick began banging at it and screaming like an enraged animal. Dezzy went straight for his phone but saw that it was dead, he screamed in frustration as he realised he forgot to charge it. He tried the landline but it was dead like the mobile and then he used his laptop but there was no Internet connection. Dezzy was starting to become hysterical as he realised that Patrick had planned this well. He held his head as he tried to think of a plan when he looked at the window, 'Yes!' he thought ecstatically in his head. He had a Trampoline in the garden that he used to play with when he was a kid. He could jump down from his window and escape through the garden gate. He opened the window and felt the colour drain from his face as he saw that the trampoline had been shredded, Patrick was not going to make it that easy however he spotted the trellis in between his room and his parents'. He grabbed his front door key and carefully climbed out the window and across the trellis to the other room. As he carefully and quietly jumped into the room he heard Patrick continuing to bang against the door of his room.
Patrick: Oh Dezzy don't make this harder on yourself, every minute you make me wait will be another minute of me cutting you to pieces later. Just come out now and I'll only slice you up a little bit. DEZZZZZZZZY!'
Dezzy looked through the keyhole as he saw Patrick repeatedly band his head against his door.
Patrick: Don't hide away like a victim! Your the villain here! You've had this coming for so long. Every put down, every time you mocked me..... YOU MADE ME FEEL LIKE SHIT and now I'm gonna make you feel like mince meat....
Dezzy had had enough, he looked into his dad's closet and find his cricket bat. This was going to stop right now. Without warning Dezzy burst out from his parents room and hit a surprised Patrick in the head with the bat.. He hit the wall and slid down.
Dezzy: I have treated you like crap and YOU WONDER WHY! LOOK AT THIS!
He pointed to his cheek.
Dezzy: You're a fucking Looney Toon!
Patrick tried to get up but Dezzy hit him again to the ribs and Patrick fell to the floor. Breathing a sigh of relief Dezzy ran to the stairs but felt his heart stop as Patrick's hand pushed him. Dezzy banged into the wall, he lost his balance and tumbled down the stairs.
Dezzy: Urgh....
His vision went blurry and he felt an incredible pain across his leg. He tried to move but he felt a foot upon his chest.
Patrick: Tut Tut Tut, Look what you done. Is your foot meant to bend that way? Let's see what I can do about it...
Dezzy vision began to sharpen when he felt the worst pain he had ever felt. He looked up between his own screams to see Patrick stamping on his now-broken ankle. He thought he was going to pass out when he felt a pain twice as worse. It seemed like Patrick had gotten hold of his knife and was going to town on Dezzy's leg.
Dezzy stumbled away and Patrick laughed that dark laugh. He raised his knife to strike the final blow but Dezzy swept his legs from underneath him. Patrick hit his head on the floor and Dezzy amazingly managed to get back onto his feet. He was running on pure adrenaline and anger. He picked up Patrick's knife and threw it away. He then grabbed Patrick and span him round before throwing him into a cabinet. It fell on top of him and knocked him out cold. It really was over this time.
Dezzy stumbled to the front door when a feeling of utter dread filled every fibre of his being....He realised he had thrown Patrick into his father's gun cabinet. He looked down to see Patrick's hand reaching for a pistol. Dezzy stumbled to the back door and tried to unlock it.
Patrick: Dezzy! Dezzy!
He sang out. He had managed to get the cabinet of himself and grab a pistol but luckily for Dezzy the impact from the cabinet dazed him like Dezzy had been earlier and he couldn't see him clearly. Knowing that he had a gun Dezzy hid in an alcove of the Kitchen in order to ambush Patrick when he came looking. As Patrick dizzily walked into the kitchen Dezzy leapt at him and grabbed his hand that had the gun. They struggled, although Dazed Patrick was stronger then him and was throwing Dezzy about trying to make him let go but Dezzy was managing to hold on.
Dezzy head-butted Patrick and managed to yank the gun away from him but he was a little too exuberant and the gun slipped from his hand and hit the back door. Both Patrick and Dezzy looked at each other briefly before they leapt towards the weapon....
----------
Shaun had arrived at Dezzy's house and heard the commotion inside. She grabbed Jack's card and began to type it into her phone as she ran up to the house but as she reached the door a terrible sound echoed through the house and into the street.
BANG
Shaun froze in shock, she could hear Jack's voice on the other end but she couldn't answer. The house was silent now, the fight had ended. 'What the hell happened' Shaun thought before thinking another thought.
'Who got shot?'
