2. Having no opportunity to vote for an independent candidate when I still have misgivings about the policies of all three main parties.

3. The electorate being consigned to tactical voting as a means to an end as opposed to voting for the party which actually represents their ideology.

Don't get me wrong, I recognise the weaknesses of PR and not every MP will an accurate representation of the the interests of their constituents, but at a national level, it the more democratic system.

Plus, anyone can draw comparisons to other countries with different political systems. What about the US and the failure the electoral college system which gave Bush an extremely dubious victory in 2000? I just think PR would work for the UK and believe a referendum would show that I am not the only one.

your vote isn't to decide the ruling party nor the pm... it's to decide your local member. 70% in your area voting lab doesn't mean your vote was worthless.... that's democracy.

I'd agree that some reform is needed though. A situation like the libdems getting 23 % of the total vote but only 57 or so seats versus lab getting 29% but 260 seats ..seems stupid.
Why don't you guys get rid of the house of lords and replace it with a proportionally elected senate. The senate ( upper house) would act as check on any new bill from the parliament ( lower house). At election time you'd vote twice... once for the upper house and once for the lower. That's the system here in oz. .... oh and before anyone rubbishes Australia...we didn't has a recession :P

Tom4784 08-05-2010 02:56 PM

I'm hoping that whoever does take No10 that the libdems get a good deal out of it, I'd like to see a fair few of their proposals and policies in action.

Right...just curious why 2 posters...at the same time decided to pick out MY vote and criticize... take your pick from below of everyone who said the same thing. Just pretty annoying.

And I don't really know how hung parliament works anyways, I voted on what would be my best scenario...

That was just a coincidence to be honest, not a personal attack at all. It could just as easily have been a response to any of those posts you mention. Just stating the figures really. A Con/Lib coalition could govern effectively because of sheer numbers. A Lab/Lib coalition could not, without getting other parties on board and making further concessions; it would be hard enough compromising one's policies with one other party, never mind with two or three others!

Vicky Millions Voted
you are not alone.

This is the problem
its simple maths

Labour and Lib do not have enough seats
so they can not take over.

Conservative and LibDem do have enough seats.

And Today we have found out that they are both Working it Out.

So David will be our New PM soon.

And some LibDems will be part of the Conservative -LibDem Deal.

Now Enid said she will leave this Nation.

Please Vicky say you will stay
we need you.

arista 08-05-2010 07:26 PM

If they back up their manifesto promises with real action everyone benefits.

You think you are better off under Labour? Look how many stealth taxes they introduced over their term in office. Give with one hand and take twice as much back with hidden taxes.

Cant see that happening to be honest, hopefully they surprise me, but I doubt it.

And as for labour, its kind of a case of better the devil you know...

This is Not about Wealth.

Both David and Nick are going to help
this Country.

Its Not Just Conservative Now
It is a LibDem And Conservative

Things Will Get Far Better.

Lucy. 08-05-2010 07:51 PM

It is totally about Wealth, Tories are in it to keep the rich rich and the poor poor.
It makes no sense for Clegg to side with Cons, people who voted Lib voted for leftist policies not right wing!
