Pretty predictable responses i had a list of members in mind beforehand:

Those that would make a joke of it rather than comment.

Those that would deny it exists on here.

Those that would try and discredit it because they feel a bit ashamed about ignoring it.

Those that would get annoyed by it.

Those with the social awareness to recognise it and see it as a problem.

I can honestly say most of you slotted right into where i thought you would :) social profiling FTW.

Great read that. Some very defensive comments from varous people in this thread.

InOne 28-12-2010 11:20 AM

The main 2 forum trolls are permbanned, the forum is now a better place.

End.

How to Spot a Forum Bully
The key is in the comments. Look at how most forum members reply to comments. Most are polite. They may disagree but they do so with a level of respect for the opinions of others, unless those opinions are genuinely ludicrous. The forum bully does not respect anyone but herself. She respects the power of others in the group, but nothing else. Everyone is beneath her. Her comments are made without regard to the feelings of anyone but herself. And if she is wrong, she cannot admit it. To do so would undermine her power. While others in the group will add prefaces to their comments or phrase their comments in the form of suggestions, the forum bully will tell others what to do, like a master issuing orders to slaves. When called on this approach, the forum bully's followers will claim the bully is just being blunt.
From Day one since I joined here, I spotted within about 2 days, quite a few members here - male and female - who follow the 'above' right down to the letter. What they don't realise is that rather than being powerful, all they are doing is showing themselves up to be weak - attack is the best form of defence - and a particularly good method when the person knows they cannot defend themselves: the only thing left for them to do is attack.

What's actually funny is that they have no idea that people who can see right through them fall between laughing at their pathetic (and very obvious) attempts at 'bullying' or trying to 'Rule the Roost' - or simply pity them for being so pathetic in the first place.

They'd never last a minute out in the real world - with REAL bullies - so they do what the 'can' online, where they can hide behind screens. They'd probably sh!t a brick if they were faced with someone who had their 'online persona' - out in the real world.

I'm on a few hot headed forums dominated almost entirely by male, educated, patronising movie buffs. We slag each other off constantly when we disagree with each other and it makes for some downright hillarious discussions which everyone forgets about in the morning. Trolls and people who simply can't be arsed making interesting, informative posts are mercilessly hounded out and instantly banned. Are we all bullies?

One glove does not fit every hand. These are also forums where no kids are allowed, there is only one or two very strict moderators who are outside the group dynamic, there are relatively few year end competitions, you leave your feelings and personal life at the door, every thread is usually relevant and highly readable, nobody bothers double accounting, drama about the forum off the forum simply doesn't exist ... and really the groups on these forums tend to be intelligent, caustic old bastards far worse than Shaun at his most scathing being mainlined through the veins InOne levels of alcohol abuse whilst being force fed all my adolescent years of general nihlism.

Then again according to the theme of this thread we are all reprehensible bullies on those forums. Then again it doesn't apply to us because only those who can handle it, post with us, and leave all personal and real life emotions and connections at the door are those allowed stay and enjoy the mere anarchy of it all.

See what I'm getting at? I know my defensive post, again by thread theme, spotlights me as some tyrannical monster but hey at least I contributed more to the thread than, say, Jordan's post. If we had all at one time or another been obnoxiously respectful to one another MeMyself&I and Raph would still have vaginas, BigLover would still be undergoing chemo, and Thomas would be welcomed as a darling of enigmatic discussion. And virtually three quaters of this forums best moments and threads would never have happened.

Sounds like a crap forum to me. To let needless decency to strangers get in the way of honesty and quality control.

Good post. And no, I wouldn't class that as bullying. I'd class that as getting rid of driftwood and the very type that actually bring good forums down.
