The creature reuniting with his family though :flutter:

Ugh I'm hoping something happens that stops them changing Lily but I can't see what would now unless Justine followed them or something.......clutching at straws now

Lostie! 17-06-2016 03:13 PM

Yeah that was so sweet, the first bit of real happiness he's had in the show too. I also like how he acknowledged the bad things he's done since coming back, makes him all the more sympathetic.

Lily's one of the best characters so I hope so :fc:

I love Dr Seward and Catriona Hartdegen.

Oh or maybe Justine will find his Portrait and destroy it

I've been thinking that for a few episodes. Tbh he pretty much dared her to do it in the latest episode

Oh you know what the worst part for me was? When Lily tried to run and she fell because she was chained to the chair and Dorian laughed at her. He's a pig I hate him :fist:

Yeah, he's a prick. He's running scared because Lily's turned out to be more of an independent thinker and less of a toy that he anticipated.

he's really turning into that character from the books though, that actor plays him well

Keep forgetting it's a double-episode finale this week!

No news on Season 4 yet so I'm preparing myself for this to be the end until some news comes (:fc:)

Lostie! 20-06-2016 01:48 PM

Just watched the first episode of the finale.

Spoiler:

Renfield is SO brilliantly eerie, he really creeps me out. I love how, since the start of the season, he's gone from mild-mannered secretary to raving madman. And as far as I'm aware he's an asylum patient in the Dracula novel so I like how he ended up in the asylum by the end of this episode. I also love how vampiric he now looks even though he actually isn't a vampire.

The smog that's engulfed London since Vanessa submitted to Dracula looks great and really elevates the whole gothic atmosphere and I like the concept of it essentially being a plague.

Billie Piper once again knocked it out of the park (and Victor let her go without giving her the serum, thank God for that!). Justine's death was sad (and Dorian was surprisingly tender about it), so I guess our theory about her killing him was wrong

A bit ominous that Vanessa didn't appear in the episode, but obviously we'll see her in all her Mother of Evil glory in the next one. I wonder if she's gone full evil.

:bawling:

Spoiler:

I guess we now know why there's been no word of a Season 4 renewal yet. That was the finale of the show. As sad as that is since this is a phenomenal show, I had worried that it would be cancelled abruptly and end without a resolution but they were clearly writing this as an ending.

My jaw dropped when Vanessa died. I sort of expected it because I'd seen a headline on a site earlier saying something like "SPOILER dies!" and I read somewhere else about it feeling like a final episode so I figured it had to be a big chararcter and Vanessa is the main protagonist after all, but still when it happened I was still shocked. Vanessa Ives has to be one of the most tragic characters I've seen on screen and Eva Green has been phenomenal.

When she died, I started thinking that this must be the end because I can't picture a show without Vanessa but it was only when "The End" appeared on screen that it really hit that this was it. I'm just so glad they gave everything a real feeling of finality, even as early as the Lily / Dorian scene I was thinking how much it felt like they were ending the story because of how fitting it seemed (Lily finally leaving Dorian and that last shot of him standing there saying "I'll always be here").

I guess The Creature ends up alone again in the end since his wife told him to not return if he doesn't go to Frankenstein to bring their son back and he chose to bury him at sea instead. Really sad since he'd spent this season to reunite with his family but fitting for the character.

I wish the show continued on because there were so many other stories that could have been told and to suddenly have it all end and wrap up did feel a little quick and rushed in places but it was apparently John Logan's decision for this season to be the end so I'm just glad the show got a real ending. It's been amazing, I'm definitely gonna miss it.

I watched the finale last night Lostie

Spoiler:

Ugh I don't know how I feel about it all, everyone ended up more miserable than they'd ever been. Not one of them got a halfway happy ending, Vanessa died oh and you know what annoyed most of the whole thing? Lily and Ethan never crossed paths, I'd been waiting for that to happen ever since Frankenstein took her!

I suppose it was fitting really for the tone the whole of the show was anyway, there wasn't really going to be a happy ending but I thought maybe atleast one of them might get that

Anyway, over all a brilliant show so beautifully shot, great acting and of course Eva Green was the absolute star of the whole thing

Yeah I know what you mean. I'd say Ethan and Malcolm got the closest to "happy" (though it was more than bittersweet) since they stick together at the end but all the other main characters just ended up alone (or in Vanessa's case, dead). But yeah, for me that sort of thing works for this sort of show but it totally makes sense how that might not be satisfactory to all.

And I agree about Ethan and Lily. To be honest, as much as I'm glad that the ends were tied up and everything had a conclusion, I do feel like it was a bit out of nowhere and rushed and plenty more could have happened in between had they continued for a little longer. And especially with a show like this that draws from gothic literature, they had so many more potential stories to tell. I know John Logan wanted to end it now so it seemingly wasn't a case of it being cancelled and him rushing an ending, but it still felt a little that way if I'm honest

And then there's characters like Seward and Catriona who we only met this season and I could have seen being permanent fixtures within the group had the show continued. Catriona especially was only in like two / three episodes which is a shame, I thought the show would go on and we'd get more from her and learn more about her past.

Still, it was of course a beautiful final episode and having it end with Vanessa dying and a voiceover from the Creature felt right to me. I just wish we had more until we got there and more of a build to the ending.

Oh and I loved the special opening titles of the finale (another reason I figured it was the last episode when watching it ), they were stunning.

IT'S (sort of) RETURNING!!

A new series called Penny Dreadful: City of Angels has been ordered, but seems to not be a continuation of the original story.

Quote:

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, the new series will explore a mix of the supernatural and the reality of the time period.
