That was before I heard of Leadsom's stance on gay marriage. At least she's tolerant, it's not like she's going to reverse the legislation.

Still - when the alternative is Teflon Theresa ReMayner - I'll back Andrea everyday.

Theresa has a terrible track record on immigration and human rights, so they kind of balance themselves out. Just three days ago she was the only candidate of the five to not guarantee the places of EU citizens currently residing in the UK, effectively describing them as a bargaining tool to use in exit negotiations - literally using actual human beings as a political weapon. And as for LGBT rights:

Be under no illusion that everything would be wonderful under her premiership, they are both just as scummy as each other.

Rob! 07-07-2016 07:01 PM

The pair of them are absolutely awful. This country is so so very screwed

Cherie 07-07-2016 07:04 PM

They both look like power will go to their heads like Josy :oh: :fist:

Withano 07-07-2016 07:14 PM

I've said all along I find Andrea Leadsom false,I wouldn't trust her one inch.

Theresa May, I cannot stand but for me is my preferred choice from 2 of the probable worst candidates in any leadership election ever.

joeysteele 07-07-2016 09:02 PM

Just watched Andrea Leadsom being asked about gay marriage and foxhunting with hounds.

The latter she would bring back if she could, the former she said she would have preferred marriage remaining a Christian thing.
What, does she think non Christians and atheists don't get married.

I doubt you can trust much of what she says.

Interesting that that list doesn't include the fact she voted in favour of same sex marriage. Not exactly unusual that someone would have a different attitude to LGBT rights in 1998 than they do now in 2016. No mention also of how it was Theresa May who refused to let police use Boris' water cannons on London's streets and has criticised the lack of diversity in the police and clamped down on racially discriminative stop and searches.

I know she did, and we could list some of the positives of pretty much any of the five candidates (and most MPs for that matter) because no one - with few exceptions - are consistently abhorrent on every issue. She does however still have an appalling track record on immigration, was behind the 'go home' vans, said we should seriously consider pulling out of the ECHR (I don't care whether she's changed her position on this in the last week, I wouldn't rule it out), decimated police budgets and frontline officer numbers and decided to bring back the snoopers charter

And I don't really think the attitude change in LGBT rights is a necessary point either, I mean sure it's a good thing, but I'm pretty sure I could find a list of MPs who've been voting in favour of LGBT rights for decades - in fact Jeremy Corbyn is one of them. What's May's excuse?

She is just as appalling a candidate as Leadsom. You know we're ****ed when you wish a pig ****er would stay

joeysteele 07-07-2016 11:08 PM

The problem is and yes, people can change their minds as to issues,I have on many things from how I thought at 16 through to 20 and now to being 24.

However, these people who become MPs, do so from a place of found, formed and set convictions.
Even to the point of where their votes as MPs were put.

I think it is justified to wonder and ask why, and even if they really have done so in fact, that they have gone full circle on some very important and often sensitive issues.

If a general election is not held within a year, this PM will not have any major elected authority and will be as wrong as those before her who did not get their own mandate from the voters at large and not just from their own party.

We have never been in the position we are in now as to the EU, imprtant decisions have to be taken and very complex time consuming deals to be negotiated both in the EU and around the World.

No way should any PM be allowed to just assume office in such a scenario, never mind be arrogant enough to even want to.

She will be an unelected PM all through if she fails to trust the voters before starting the leaving process.
That will be outrageous.

Well the thing is he wasn't in fact unelected if you and the Conservative party feel it is fine for this leader to do so now.
All the criticism of him as to that should also be void now.

Not for me however, I think he was wrong and I will always say this leader will also, at a more difficult time will also be extremely wrong not to go to the Country.

Yes but its quite disingenuous to cherry pick her voting record to suggest she's completely opposed to LGBT rights by deliberately omitting her support for one of the most important pieces of LGBT legislation in recent memory. Sure some people were ahead of the times in their support for gay rights but amongst the general public its clearly been a case of slow but steady progression and its quite likely that May has followed a similar path.

With immigration its worth remembering that it was her job to cut the numbers to fulfil a manifesto pledge that the government were elected on. By all intents and purposes she did not clamp down on it as much as many in this country would have liked. Similar story with the police budget as well seeing as every cabinet member was tasked with finding cutbacks in their department. And crime has fallen under her watch, she's battled against abuses in the police force, she's fought to end modern slavery and refused to extradite Gary McKinnon to the USA - none of that ties in with an image of a woman who doesn't care about human rights. Theresa May would never have been my first choice for PM but we can do a lot worse and Leadsom would be a disaster.
