On the one hand I can sympathise with the army's motivations

On the other I deplore military coups and nothing good can come of the army usurping power

Amazing that this seems to have come out of nowhere - to carry out something like this takes weeks of planning and the involvement of thousands of people from senior commanders to the rank and file yet no one was talking about it. Crazy times we live in.

This is some scary stuff. Sky News showing a soldier in a tank firing a gun and then being swamped by government supporters. Looks like this could get increasingly violent.

Its a propaganda war too, we will just need to see how it pans out

Just had to try to calm my friend's mum down who is in complete dispair over the fact that her daughter is in Turkey right now.

Awful with all flights cancelled as well, it really is terrifying for people in Turkey at the moment

It truly is, Cherie. She wa so devestated because she landed in Turkey three or four hours earlier than when the coup began. I reassured her that she would be fine in a holiday-type resort, but it's such a frightening situation.

The coup is a good thing for the country as long as the violence/shooting doesn't come to anything too serious

It still amazes me that people take anything Obama says seriously.

Coups very rarely result in better conditions afterwards. There's really nothing you can do or should do. This is Turkey's problem and they have to deal with it themselves.
