Surely Sue/Mel's and Mary/Paul's fees aren't extravagantly high? The cost of the appliances does add up but surely doesn't come to much. They literally bake in a tent, so I don't understand how that would cost money unless they rent land property. Am I totally getting the wrong idea here? Does the BBC fund all of these things?

As far as I'm aware, it doesn't - the production team are just demanding a ridiculous amount for the rights now that it's so popular and lucrative

Ross. 12-09-2016 10:18 PM

Mess not 40 hours of Bake Off a year

Rip </3

Channel 4 will do a damn sight better than ITV but the ratings drop is going to be atrocious.

Oh okay, thanks. The figure astounds me, but I'm not well-informed on the business and financial part of TV production.

This stresses me out so much I wanna ****ing eat (Gemma Collins, 2016).

Same here.

Jack_ 12-09-2016 11:06 PM

I don't watch it but this is a huge blow to the BBC and yet more evidence of how damaging this government is to its future

The worst thing about all of this is that yet again the BBC themselves will be blamed when in actuality it's Whittingdale and co's legacy that is at fault here. And it's a vicious circle - they force cutbacks on the corporation, people complain about the quality of content and thus are more sympathetic to the notion of scaling back or ceasing the licence fee, and the problem gets worse. Exactly what is happening to the NHS is going to happen here and it's tragic.

That said, at least Channel 4 is a public service network - this is a huge coup for them and will undoubtedly be a better home for it than ITV

Gstar 12-09-2016 11:42 PM

I enjoyed it being on BBC (no adverts) :(

It's also gonna snatch the BB3 finale record for Channel 4s highest rating

Mel & Sue to step down when it moves to Channel 4:

Quote:

"We were very shocked and saddened to learn yesterday evening that Bake Off will be moving from its home. We made no secret of our desire for the show to remain where it was.

The BBC nurtured the show from its infancy and helped give it its distinctive warmth and charm, growing it from an audience of two million to nearly 15 million at its peak.

We've had the most amazing time on Bake Off, and have loved seeing it rise and rise like a pair of yeasted Latvian baps.

We're not going with the dough. We wish all the future bakers every success."

:omgno:

It's all happening too fast.

lewis111 13-09-2016 03:43 PM

The show is ruined
Those 2 made the show what it is no one could get anywhere near their level

Tarryn 13-09-2016 03:44 PM

Long term the production company have just ruined it for themselves.
On the BBC it could have ran for years but changing it to C4 will mean less viewers, only 45 minutes per episode if they keep it to the one hour slot & now losing two of the most popular elements of the show is death for it.
Who wants to watch the GBBO if it's not the GBBO
I'm confused why C4 would want this show. It's not something they usually would broadcast anyway.

Babayaro. 13-09-2016 03:45 PM

Bye at no Mel & Sue

lewis111 13-09-2016 03:45 PM

The show was only getting bigger on BBC they were foolish to move it to Channel 4

Ross. 13-09-2016 03:48 PM

If Mary & Paul leave too then what's the point really

Braden 13-09-2016 04:08 PM

I'm done.

It was nice knowing you Bake Off.

Suze 13-09-2016 04:12 PM

It's the beginning of the end for it :( can't see Paul and Mary staying with the show when it changes hands or if they do then then not for long. Greedy production company  it will be their undoing.

Jack_ 13-09-2016 04:15 PM

Capitalism at its very worst.

Love Productions have surely shot themselves in the foot here with their greed. ITV made the right call in stressing their bid must come with the confirmation that the talent remains, if Mary and Paul step down too then it would appear Channel 4 have bought a turkey and Love Productions have sold one of their biggest products down the river, and run the risk of getting themselves blacklisted by top BBC (and dare I say other broadcasters) execs in the process :pat:

caprimint 13-09-2016 04:15 PM

Mel, Sue, Paul and Mary are all part of what the show is about. There will be a major ratings decline I imagine.

Apparently Mel & Sue didn't contact Channel 4 before quitting:
