For what? For daring to become one of the elite and shaking it up or for regenerating a ****ing city by investing in housing and grassroots football.

You don't half talk rubbish.

Bruno Fernandes appeared to speak out against the European Super League and how it would not replace his “dreams” of playing in the Champions League.

Fernandes’ club, Manchester United, are confirmed as one of the founding members of the breakaway competition, announced on Sunday evening.

But the Portugal international concurred with compatriot and Wolves star Daniel Podence, who insisted the new competition could not replace the history and memories associated with the Uefa Champions League.

"Dreams can't be bought", Fernandes wrote alongside three clapping hands emojis, while quoting Podence’s post on Instagram.

Alongside a picture of himself playing in the Champions League for Olympiacos, Podence wrote: “The Ball. The Song. The Dream. Zidane’s volley... Kaka’s Solo... Liverpool In Athens... Ole in Barcelona... Cris and Seedorf...

“There some things we just can’t really pay for.”

arista you clearly have no interest in football so I'm wondering why you are prioritising business over the sport? 90% of fans oppose this move, and I dare say the majority of the other 10% are either other-PL-fans trolling or have no idea what the hell the implications of this 'league' would be

The sport has already been incredibly lucrative for soulless corporate ghouls ever since the invention of cable TV packages and Sky starting up in 1993 or whenever... ticket prices have skyrocketed way beyond inflation, merchandise and kits alongside it, and on top of paying £60+ a month to see some games on TV, they now want to go and play in some meaningless pageant?

The very nature of football is to see teams go up and down... if you're finishing at the bottom of the Super League, what's even the point? Who do you dare sell shirts and tickets to? What do the fans have to acheive and dream of? As an Arsenal fan I am pretty resolute in saying we will never win the damn thing, not with Barca/Madrid/the other PL teams present, so what the hell is the point? I should imagine Spurs, AC Milan and Inter fans must feel the same way... not a chance of winning. Ever. Then I imagine Spurs have grown accustomed to that :hee:

I'm not even taking the international implications into consideration... it's a huge middle finger to the FA, and other big European national teams, to essentially jeopardise the best players never being able to play at the World Cup... for ****'s sake it doesn't get bigger than the World Cup, and nothing ever will.

Good on them for having some morals.

City have disgusted me in the whole thing. Theyve literally sided with the very clubs that just spent the last 2 years trying to destroy them. Anything for a bit of £££ and we are hardly struggling for it.

the maximum commercial ownership in football in germany is 49%, so the fans hold the majority shareholding, hence no german clubs are involved in the super league. Seems like an excellent system to me

rusticgal 19-04-2021 04:36 PM

Its so elitist....I cannot believe these teams have agreed to it...no thought for their fans whatsoever.

bots 19-04-2021 04:43 PM

the normal club fans don't enter into the equation, they know money will come in from "global fans" and they don't need to earn so much when it is only funding 15 teams

Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said the UK Government will be "reviewing everything the Government does" to support the so-called big six football clubs who have decided to join the European Super League.

Making a statement on the matter in the Commons, he said he has spoken to the football authorities, adding: "My message for them was clear: they have our full backing.

"But, be in no doubt, if they can't act we will. We will put everything on the table to prevent this from happening. We are examining every option from governance reform to competition law and mechanisms that allow football to take place.

"Put simply, we will be reviewing everything the Government does to support these clubs to play. I have discussed these options with the Prime Minister this morning and we are working at pace across Government and with football authorities.

"We will do everything it takes to protect our national game. These clubs have decided to put money ahead of fans."
