I'm Bi right, and everyday i hear the word "Gay" as a "Cuss" a way of offending people, sometimes me. I understand that some people can't except gay people because of there religion but they don't have to be so rude about it.

Hello Loukas. I have just read your first post. What does being gay/bi have to do with religion?
Because it goes against the bible.
Not just the Bible. In some other countries youu can be executed for being gay because of religion and the strong beliefs.
What they said...

I get homophobic abuse all the time, because I don't even have the most masculine voice. But I have some great come-backs. U2U me with what people say and I'll give you a smart-arse comment that will shut there mouths. Trust me, it works for me everytime.

We were discussing this in our PSHE session yesterday, and today someone brought it up in Science on our table, and I, and other people ended up talking about it. I will talk about this later.

I personally do not like homophobia, I find it disgusting and I can tell you I am 100% straight. I think that people are entitled to like what and who they like, and it is not for other people to decide what is right and what is wrong. Most children see it as "not socially acceptable" to be gay, and that it is wrong. I disagree. Just because it may not be considered to be the "normal" thing to be, it doesn't mean that it is wrong. As I said earlier, people are entitled to do what they want with their lives, and being gay/bisexual is something which people should be respected for.

Now, onto the PSHE and Science lessons I mentioned. In the PSHE session yesterday, one of the tasks we were asked to do was to get into small groups and discuss different topics surrounding homosexuality, such as "Should gay be used as an insult?". One of the topics which another group were given was "Should gay people be allowed to adopt?", and immediately afterwards someone on the row behind me said "No they shouldn't", so I asked him why he thought this and after much thought all he said was "because they will make the child gay", which I personally found pathetic.

I am all for respecting peoples opinions and such, especially if it is against their religion, but if I am going to respect their opinion, I would like them to have a reason why they think such things. When I ask people why they do not like homosexuals and all they answer is something along the lines of "because they're gay" I do not respect their opinion, as it is not valid, and there are no points to back it up.

Another thing that was brought up in this session, was "queer bashing", I think it's called that, where people beat homosexuals up just because of their sexuality. This is disgusting IMO, and what was even more disgusting was that after the session was over, some people thought it would be funny outside to say to people "I'm going to queer bash you", because they thought is was acceptable to do this.

All of this as I have said, I found disgusting and unacceptable, and I will talk about the discussion I had with some other people in Science today once I have recieved a few replies to this. Sorry for such a long post, but this is a subject that I have strong opinions on.

Noone is 100% straight

Everyone finds people of the same sex more/less attractive than eachother whether you admit it or not, and even if its not a sexual attraction its still some sort of physical attraction. If you were 100% straight you'd see all people of the same sex in the same way. The balance is more 90/10 at the 'straightest', most masculine end.

Arneldo 04-07-2008 04:54 PM

I find it offensive when people use "gay" in a negative way, and use it as a insult. Just stupid things like "That's so gay" pisses me off. My mates take the piss sometimes, I can cop it from them but there is a line and sometimes they come very close to crossing it. My mate used the term "shirtlifter" the other day, and I just walked out of the room. I cannot stand that term, it drives me mad. Homophobia is just as bad as racism, sexism, ageism - whatever. But I think for reason, it's overlooked. People need to learn and understand that this is not a life choice. I did not wake up one morning and decide to be this way. I was born gay, I am gay. Just like somebody else might be born straight.

Loukas 04-07-2008 04:55 PM

Tom, my mate said that! She said "Everyone loves everyone, nobody is straight, everyones bi! They are just not in touch with it!?" whatever that means lol

I'd dispute that. I think we learn whether we are gay or straight.

Its not so much that everyones bi because to me the thought of jumping in bed with another male repulses me tbh but I'm straight enough, confident enough and comfortable enough to admit that I believe noone is 100% straight because men can think other men are good looking but not really want them in a sexual way- just like how girls are always complimenting each other on how good they look. It doesn't mean they want to have sex with each other does it? Its just some 'straight' people IMO aren't comfortable enough to admit something like that because it might mean people will think they're gay- hidden secret or worried? Who knows.

Fair enough. I think I was more interested in getting my point across, rather than stating my sexuality, so it was just a quick point to say that although I dislike homophobia, I am still straight. I think I felt the need to put it in, because I am used to people saying "so you're gay then" when I put my point across, but obviously I should of realised that wouldn't have happened here.

Thank you for bringing up it up, and looking at the points you have given, I would have to agree with you, no one is 100% straight. You learn something new everyday.

I think everyone will learn and become the person they are as they grow up - but I believe you are born gay, or not. It's not a life choice, it's not a decison we make. We either are or we are not.

Well I respect your views but my personal belief as explained a few pages back is that we're born as a blank slate and we pick things up through social conditioning. There are studies which suggest we can learn behaviour types such as aggression and I think sexuality is a behaviour type.

If that's the case then how do you explain siblings who go to the same school, have the same circle of friends, live in the same house within the same area, where 1 of them is gay and the other is straight?

Are you telling me that if I was born in London into Darenn's family, had his upbringing, went to his school etc etc, I would not find Jennifer Ellison sexually attractive? But instead I'd fancy John Barrowman?

Hugo 04-07-2008 06:24 PM

I don't necessarily think you are born gay, I just think that you find another sex more attractive than another so basically Bi on different scales.

If its same sex siblings then theres evidence suggesting that if you have an older brother then you're more likely to be gay.

If its different sex siblings then it could be that one is wanting to be 'like' the other and plays with them in the first few years? I know what I'm trying to say but I'm not sure how to word it.

But the scenario you have outlined is very unlikely because no two people live identical lifestyles and thats what you're trying to imply. For a start siblings will be in different classes so there will be a different group of people they interact with daily.

I think the bottom bit about you & Darenn switching would work like that. I wouldn't expect you both to be identical to how the other person is now but I'd say very similar. The only things I'd say that would be different would be the obvious- basic appearance things such as bone structure, skin tone, eye colour etc.

Hugo 04-07-2008 06:35 PM

I don't like labels gay or straight ect. I just think liking the oposite sex is most common so its like most people don't like marmite but a few people love it, the people who like the same sex.

P.S I'm not saying if you like marmite your gay! lol

I know EXACTLY how you feel!
Every day I'd be walking in school, and within 5 minutes, I have been called "gay" or "queer" or "****" about 6 times. I have learnt to deal with it and when I'm with my friends I laugh about it, but it does hurt, and I just think "why can't they just accept people who are different?" I don't know these people, I have never spoken to them or offended them, yet they insist on offending me. The world needs to open up to new cultures and people. I know some people can't help but feel homophobic, due to their religion or their upbringing, but if they know it will hurt other people, why can't they just keep it to themselves? I'm not even gay, btw.I'm Bi. lol. But it's all the same to them. I am openly bi in my school, and many people respect me for being so open. Some people are genuinely interested in me, and don't feel anger or hatred towards me, and I don't mind answering any questions they ask, but it's the little, to be polite, bananas, that tease you or ask you personal question deliberately to make you feel uncomfortable that annoy me. Unfortunately, this is just the world in which we live in. Hopefully, as the years go by, and being gay/bi/lesbian becomes more frequent, the world will become more accepting of us, and we will all be able to live in harmony. (Just thought I would end on a cheesy note :D)
