I would like to have seen the confrontation, someone saying good morning didn't sound that threatening, maybe he fancied her and was trying to break the ice?
If she walked that way everyday he may have just wanted to speak to her, it's being made out to be very sinister.
Even the vid in the article, it's just one whistle that sounds a long way off.
It's hard to get a specific context on this really.

Do we? I don't. I don't go wandering the streets at 3am but when doped-up idiots decide to stand in the way blocking shop doorways etc. to be "funny" or "intimidating" or "impress their mates" I sure as **** don't run off with my tail between my legs, I walk straight through the ****ers. I wouldn't get to work some days if I didn't :/.

Who knows. Maybe one of them will pull a knife on me one day, and then there can be a thread on here about it where you tell everyone that I brought it on myself because I should have walked around and come in the fire exit at the back like a scared little bitch. Is that what you would do, LT? Is that the "clever" thing to do? I can think of a few words for it... none of them are "clever" :joker:.

Again, she didn't go out at night so your point is escaping me. Should she put herself out by walking another way which could take her twice as long just to avoid a few pigs?

My Uncle and two cousins are all builders and I've never heard of any of them harrasing passers by.

Would you be fine with your wife going to a supermarket and being harrased by a worker in the store? they're working class too.

..I'm wondering what 'her sort' is..someone who likes to feel pretty/feel good about herself and have confidence when she walks down the street, wouldn't everyone like that, male or female..but that's not 'her sort' expecting someone getting in her face or shouting comments from their car...if that was the case then she would have engaged in conversations and flirtations in the month that they were doing it, which she didn't...

...hmm, these things are always interesting though because if it's a perceived attractive female then it's often...well what does she expect, t'is men just being men as opposed to disrespectful idiots being disrespectful idiots and really she needs to look at herself/her confidence/and what she's wearing etc...and if it's a female that's not perceived as so physically attractive, it's often, well goddamn she should think herself lucky to get comments in her face....the females lose and the females lose/zero points to the females..but no, it's not a gender thing though, it's an idiot thing and a disrespect thing ...

user104658 29-04-2015 06:46 AM

The whole "they should take it as a compliment" thing is definitely not a gender thing, not these days anyway. I actually had to have words with a trainee staff member recently (which is unusual, I have a very laid back management style hactually :joker: ) for basically constantly perving at a young male customer's legs when he comes in in football shorts. Making loud comments and what can only be described as "purring" at the poor lad. He was laughing and smiling but to me, he also looked seriously uncomfortable... He's just a kid really, 19 I think, and he was getting obviously increasingly embarrassed.

Theres nothing wrong with flirting but people need to get much, much better at reading body language and stop when someone is clearly not happy about it.

Why should she have to walk a completely different route, even crossing the street wouldn't really help, she would still have to listen to them, I do think dialling 999 was an over reaction though

....hmmm, I bet you were having little sneaky peeks at those fine legs yourself, TS...but yes, people will notice and look at things they find attractive in people they see on the street/in their place of work etc but it's when it's advanced to making inappropriate comments/feeling it's ok to make those comments and making someone feel uncomfortable and awkward ....

Yep it can happen from both sides, we should try to keep gender out of it really because all men or all builders (as in this case) aren't all like that, I'd like to think most men have more respect and wouldn't intimidate someone like that

Kirk was away for a few days making lots of lovely money. I have just SOLD OUT all the seats on 5 x 46 seater buses to take members of 'THE GRIMSBY SOCIETY OF UGLY NEGLECTED FISHWIVES' from Grimsby to Worcester and they have paid another £100 each for my 'Tour Guide' to lead them back and forwards past the construction site where Poppy Smart was accosted.

Wolf-whistling builder accused of sexual harassment boasts it has helped him 'snog so many women' and brands his target 'a silly little girl' (but admits he DOES have a girlfriend)

A builder who wolf-whistled a young woman only to be accused of sexual harassment said today she is a 'silly little girl' who was 'lucky' to have received the attention.
Ian Merrett, 28, is astonished that Poppy Smart, 23, did not take it as a compliment, which he says has helped him 'snog loads of girls' in the past.
The builder and his colleagues whistled at her every day for a month as she passed their Worcester construction site.
Miss Smart, who compared the wolf-whistling to racial discrimination, eventually filmed them and asked West Mercia Police to investigate alleged sexual harassment.
Mr Merrett admits it was probably him whistling but called Miss Smart a 'silly little girl' who should never have gone to the police.
He said: 'I'm sure if she walks past again and she is lucky she will get wolf-whistled again. I have wolf-whistled so many girls and got so many birds and snogged so many girls off the back of that, and never had a complaint before. But I've got a girlfriend so need to be careful what I say'.

Ok, so not many things pull my attention like this article in the papers recently. After doing a quick search on the article i found this forum thread and after a while reading all the comments just had to reply...

So yes, im new here. Hi.

Since the dawn of man, women and their beauty have been worshiped in one form of another, and since as long as i can remember, wolf whistling has been a sign of a compliment for the working class men to use. I'm male and believe it or not on occasion in my youth i've had women whilste at me from their cars. I've always taken it as a compliment as i'm sure many women feel the same. There is zero justification for this individual wasting police time for wolf whistling.

However...

If this has been persistent, then ideally she ought to just ask them to stop. There are so many options available that could be addressed long before "using the sledgehammer to crack the walnut" approach. I'm sure many of you ask people to stop tapping a pen on a desk when it annoys you, ask people to stop humming and so forth. It's a simple enough request and with manners nobody takes offence. I'm sure you get the point.

If they physically blocked her access, once again no excuse for this, but i find it very difficult to believe that two builders would prevent a woman from walking down the road without physically touching her, that could border on assault, at which we would be looking at a different charge altogether.

You can take alot of example from films over the decades of men whistling at women that look attractive, have all features in the right places that men find enticing... take Pretty Woman featuring Julia Roberts after she goes on her shopping spree... she knows she looks good, she knows she flaunting it and she enjoys the attention from various men.

This girl Poppy is most DEFINITELY flaunting it, id hazard a guess a girl of her demographic has Facebook, Instagram and so forth, and it's highly likely she uploads images of herself, her friends and so forth. I'd go as far to say some of these pictures flaunt her assets... as Facebook, Instagram own the rights to any images uploaded to their platforms, she can't argue about who can and can't compliment her image, assets and so forth.

If you don't want to be noticed and whistled at, don't make yourself noticeable.

Niamh. 29-04-2015 03:01 PM

Welcome to the forum Kitchenspoon.

I guess the difference is that this was an on going thing for that girl, day in day out and not just a once in a while type thing? Also, following her and blocking her path is intimidating, I'm guessing you're a guy so maybe you don't understand how that could be intimidating for a girl walking on her own? Maybe if it were your sister or cousin or daughter in that situation you'd feel differently? Also, why do you suppose she'd go so far as to report it to the Police if she didn't feel harassed by it?
