So basically something can only be racist if there is nastiness behind it?

Whether Anthony was or wasn't racist, Malteser Head is definitely a racist remark, whether he intended to be racist or not.

I don't think it's comparable to the slave trade or the N word tbh (for like a million reasons, but one being that the slave owners may have been accustomed to it but they still treated black people as less than them which is why they were racist, and the N word is obviously different and a racist word because of it's history (which isn't applicable to 'malteaser head') but even so, yes it can be used in a non-racist way, e.g. rappers etc. So all I'm saying is that the person's intent should be considered instead of automatically labeling someone as racist purely on something they've said (this whole thing only started because it was suggested that Anthony was a racist for saying it.)

Ok but calling someone "Malteser Head" is treating someone as less than you - it's making out that the person is worse than you for being a "Malteser Head", which is an insult only applicable to black people anyway? He clearly wasn't saying it as anything other than to be nasty - and going by your philosophy it's only racist if you intend to be nasty, which he did.

It's not about 'intent to be nasty', it's about 'intent to be racist', ie, have an actual belief that you're better than someone else because they're black. That's not my philosophy, that's just what racism is. And I don't think that using the term 'malteaser head' is enough to show that he views himself as better than black people, or for him to be judged as racist because of it. I honestly think stuff like this diminishes real racism when it happens. It was just a silly meaningless comment.

^But you're focusing on him as a person, not the comment. Of course he probably isn't racist - he had sex with Makosi in the jacuzzi and she was black

There's no denying however that the comment itself was racist, whether that was his intention or not.

Both of them are more potentially offensive than the things Ant said.

Yep

Yeah, I do get where you're coming from, and maybe I was wrong to say there's nothing racist in the term at all, it just bothers me a little bit when it's implied that someone is racist whenever a reference is made to someone's skin colour, regardless of what that reference is because with racism especially, there's such huge degrees of it, hence my comments.
(Kind of half bringing it back to Nikki lol...) I was actually rewatching some old BB7 clips last night randomly, and saw Nikki refer to Sam as a 'Man-Beast', and it made me think about this discussion, and how it was something that I'd say is clearly a transphobic comment, but at the same time I don't really consider her to be transphobic. But anyway, that's still not really relevant to the thread so I'll stop derailing now  (It's all Daniel's fault really...)

I think a BBCan format would give BBUK a whole new leaae of life. Maybe they could keep the public vote though, once POV has been played?

Perched for HMs gushing over their "amazing new lamp from Ikea."

tbh if Big Brother is going to fail there's no choice but to give it a BBUS/BBCAN format maybe with all the old housemates :hee:
