I find things like this scarier than the shooting and violence to be honest. People have become totally reliant on mobile communication and I think it's easy to forget that, if people in power want to cut us off at a moments notice, they absolutely can. There was a large-scale power outage where I live (over 50 mile radius) a couple of weeks ago and even in a power cut I'm used to being able to message my wife at work etc. to let her know - but in this case the radius was so wide that it knocked out all of the nearby data towers as well. No signal at all on any device, not even emergency, and I had this moment of "errrr wtf do I do?", feeling totally isolated and cut off. And that was just a powercut in the middle of the afternoon.
But anyway, I guess my point is, we forget how easy it would be for the authorities to shut down a comms tower and leave us all flapping in the dark.
