Fifa has ordered Russia to complete their upcoming matches without their flag, anthem and as the Football Union of Russia in neutral territory, following the invasion of Ukraine.
Several nations have announced that they will refuse to play Russia, including England, as well as Poland, Czech Republic and Sweden. World Cup play-offs would see Russia face Poland then either the Czech Republic or Sweden if they win - and are due to be played in March. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a military invasion of neighbouring Ukraine on Thursday. Fifa said talks will take place with other sporting organisations over whether Russia should be expelled from competitions. "Fifa would like to reiterate its condemnation of the use of force by Russia in its invasion of Ukraine," world football's governing body said in a statement on Sunday. "Violence is never a solution and Fifa expresses its deepest solidarity to all people affected by what is happening in Ukraine." "Fifa will continue its ongoing dialogue with the International Olympic Committee, Uefa and other sport organisations to determine any additional measures or sanctions, including a potential exclusion from competitions, that shall be applied in the near future should the situation not be improving rapidly. "Fifa's thoughts remain with everybody affected by this shocking and worrying situation. Earlier on Sunday the Football Association announced England will not play any international matches against Russia at any level following the invasion of Ukraine. The FA said they "wholeheartedly condemn the atrocities being committed by the Russian leadership". English football's governing body said the boycott of matches will be "for the foreseeable future". https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/60548685 |

He's not going to fire ICBM's and tactical nukes are sort of moot these days. There are extremely high yield non-nuclear weapons that achieve the same goals without the political implications, and Russia has plenty of them. |

We haven't taken this sort of action against other countries around the World when they've been scrapping. This type of uncharacteristic behaviour makes me curious. I thought sport was about bringing people together? |
yes, that is true, politics has never been allowed in sport up until recently, but fifa have little choice when countries say they arent going to play russia

I don't know enough about Putin in general to know if he seems increasingly "insane", but my mum has a theory that he's been diagnosed with a terminal disease, and wants to take as much of the world with him as possible :joker: makes more sense than thinking he's simply crazy, I guess. |

i certainly don't want to come on to this forum and say "told ya"
I guess i have watched putin more closely than many having at one time lived in russia, over the 22 years he has been in power i see a big change in behaviour |

I don't know, maybe others who have been following him more closely can also see an escalation. If he's "mad" it's in the sociological sense of being power mad/perhaps just not giving a **** any more. He's not "insane" in the sense of being mentally ill, though. There's just nothing about him or his demeanor that suggests that in the slightest. People who have actually "gone mad" aren't like movie villains ... they have quite obviously erratic behaviour and disordered thinking. Kanye West would be a good example of someone who the public sees as "mad" who is clearly genuinely unwell. Putin just ... isn't. His decisions are terrible, some unthinkable, but his mental capacity is fine. |

I don't know what to think. Is he insane, or evil, or both. He certainly hasn't gone into this in a rational, well thought out way. :conf: |

If they asked Trump to sort this mess out right now, it would be over by the morning.

Liss Truss has said Brits are welcome to travel to Ukraine and fight against Russia, a number of Brits who have fought in wars before are already on their way aswell as some who plan to help people escape safely
|
Why are our governments so good at getting our servicemen and women killed in needless conflict?
Just go get the people out safely! |
