Fifa has ordered Russia to complete their upcoming matches without their flag, anthem and as the Football Union of Russia in neutral territory, following the invasion of Ukraine.

Several nations have announced that they will refuse to play Russia, including England, as well as Poland, Czech Republic and Sweden.

World Cup play-offs would see Russia face Poland then either the Czech Republic or Sweden if they win - and are due to be played in March.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a military invasion of neighbouring Ukraine on Thursday.

Fifa said talks will take place with other sporting organisations over whether Russia should be expelled from competitions.

"Fifa would like to reiterate its condemnation of the use of force by Russia in its invasion of Ukraine," world football's governing body said in a statement on Sunday.

"Violence is never a solution and Fifa expresses its deepest solidarity to all people affected by what is happening in Ukraine."

"Fifa will continue its ongoing dialogue with the International Olympic Committee, Uefa and other sport organisations to determine any additional measures or sanctions, including a potential exclusion from competitions, that shall be applied in the near future should the situation not be improving rapidly.

"Fifa's thoughts remain with everybody affected by this shocking and worrying situation.

Earlier on Sunday the Football Association announced England will not play any international matches against Russia at any level following the invasion of Ukraine.

The FA said they "wholeheartedly condemn the atrocities being committed by the Russian leadership".

English football's governing body said the boycott of matches will be "for the foreseeable future".

Personally, i do feel that russia will fire off some nukes, whether they are tactical or strategic is the big question

I hope i am being alarmist, but putin is no longer a sane and therefore predictable person

I personally highly doubt it but then I'm far less convinced than you are that Putin is even vaguely "insane"... He's no more insane than Boris is bumbling/stupid. Convincing your enemies that you're either stupid or an unpredictable wildcard is a clever move if you can pull it off.

He's not going to fire ICBM's and tactical nukes are sort of moot these days. There are extremely high yield non-nuclear weapons that achieve the same goals without the political implications, and Russia has plenty of them.

Apart from punishing the football players (who have done nothing wrong) I don't see what this achieves.

We haven't taken this sort of action against other countries around the World when they've been scrapping.

This type of uncharacteristic behaviour makes me curious.

I thought sport was about bringing people together?

bots 27-02-2022 06:52 PM

yes, that is true, politics has never been allowed in sport up until recently, but fifa have little choice when countries say they arent going to play russia

Quite. While maybe Boris manner may well be naturally a bit blustery, I don't get how people still think he's the bumbling idiot he portrays himself as. Thinking that his view of the world is blinkered or limited is valid, but stupid he is not.

I don't know enough about Putin in general to know if he seems increasingly "insane", but my mum has a theory that he's been diagnosed with a terminal disease, and wants to take as much of the world with him as possible :joker: makes more sense than thinking he's simply crazy, I guess.

i certainly don't want to come on to this forum and say "told ya"

I guess i have watched putin more closely than many having at one time lived in russia, over the 22 years he has been in power i see a big change in behaviour

I think he almost certainly wants to be listed in the history books alongside other Big Russian Names, and I think he thought he could take Ukraine quickly, decisively and impressively. I think it's highly UNlikely that he wants to be in those books for starting a nuclear war in a rage/that's seen as impulsive or illogical. If it isn't the end of the world/world as we know it, it would at the very least be the end of Russia as a viable nation. They would be completely isolated from the rest of the world for a very long time, or until a complete regime change.

I don't know, maybe others who have been following him more closely can also see an escalation. If he's "mad" it's in the sociological sense of being power mad/perhaps just not giving a **** any more. He's not "insane" in the sense of being mentally ill, though. There's just nothing about him or his demeanor that suggests that in the slightest. People who have actually "gone mad" aren't like movie villains ... they have quite obviously erratic behaviour and disordered thinking. Kanye West would be a good example of someone who the public sees as "mad" who is clearly genuinely unwell. Putin just ... isn't. His decisions are terrible, some unthinkable, but his mental capacity is fine.

Boris is far from stupid...and your Mum's theory...I've heard quite a few people express that opinion which would be horrific if true.
I don't know what to think. Is he insane, or evil, or both. He certainly hasn't gone into this in a rational, well thought out way. :conf:

I doubt he wants to "take the world with him" or that that is the motivation anyway... ... why play games? He'd just do it . I think if the theory holds water though, and he is terminally ill, it might simply be that he knows he has limited time left to make his mark on history.

If they asked Trump to sort this mess out right now, it would be over by the morning.

Why are our governments so good at getting our servicemen and women killed in needless conflict?
