it shows that trump is not the only problem with the american political system, he is just a symptom. It doesn't select the best candidates for the job

It feels quite recently MORE broken though... at least within my lifetime. Even ol' Gee Dubya was far more presidential than this pantomime. I'm utterly baffled that Biden ended up as the opposition to Trump. I'm not saying it should have been Sanders either - I like him more but let's face it he's a hair away from the retirement home as well. Where are the respectable, authoritative candidates??

Niamh. 01-10-2020 08:57 AM

How on Earth are those two man babies the best possible candidates in America? What a joke

Reagan got elected ... a B movie actor fgs  and he quite clearly had dementia

I fail to see how people are seeing the two as bad as each other

:umm2: its basically do the american people want another 4 years with the massive failure that is Trump, mr i solely think about economy in coronacrisis

and if he is voted in another term, he'll continue as it goes right now, only thinking about economy

also he and his family did NOT wear a mask at that debate night

at least Biden has the decency of showing the right example to the public by wearing a mask

Whoever told Biden to keep staring right into the camera as he speaks needs to be sacked. It was skin-crawlingly creepy. I could practically feel him sniffing my hair.

I don't think anything Biden did was noticeable, mainly because the draft/tax dodger kept screeching like a tantrumming child over everyone.

To be fair it was a waste of time for both, neither came across "well" enough to win anyone over, or "bad" enough to put someone off who might have voted for them anyway.

Dodging the draft is a redundant thing to moan about, no-one should be forced into the military.

You can't 'both sides' this to make Biden look just as bad as Trump, there was a clear worse side here and that was the side that refused to denounce white supremacy.

The draft is relevant because Trump uses the military as a prop, and it's just another example of him flouting the law. I disagree with drafts but many of the people who he admonishes were, like him, old enough to be drafted and did so.

He dodges taxes, he dodged the draft, he dodges denouncing hatred.

Trump is behind in the polls, so logically he wants to win over those who have switched back to the dems ... which is believe it or not, married middle aged women .... his performance the other evening would not win them back

I'm not "both sides"ing, I'm ... "neither sides"ing  neither one of them shined or bombed. Biden looked creepy, Trump looked ... like Trump  it was a mess, neither deserve to be voted in.

There is actually SOME evidence that Trump has put off a few of his less committed supporters by failing to distance himself from actual white supremacist groups. Publicly, anyway. They may well still put an X in the box - they're just less willing to announce their allegiance, but given how heavily influenced elections are by tribalism these days, that's actually quite important.

I've not seen that bit - I was just randomly clicking through on youtube, I guess that bit wasn't one I landed on:laugh:

Dodgy if true, but tabloids are notorious for making a headline out of half a quote.

It's not so much a quote as a dogged refusal to say that white supremacy is a bad idea. He just umms and ahhs around the topic and refuses to say anything. Whether that's because he actually agrees with it or because he knows that denouncing it would probably impact his poll numbers more strongly than not doing so ( :umm2: ) is up for debate, but the effect is the same. People who are generally pro-Trump but don't want to, or can't (e.g. due to employment) openly be seen to support the supremacist groups have to take down their banners and stop their vocal support even if their voting intention stays the same.

Trump already spoke about how he only wears masks when he feels it's in an appropriate situation, not for the sake of it to appeal to the public.
