The Xbox One doesn't have to be online all the time, but it does have to be online. Not just once in a while—once a day, according to Microsoft vice president Phil Harrison.

In a Q&A on their press site for the new Xbox, Microsoft tackles the always-on question with a strangely-worded answer: "No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet."

At the event in Redmond today, Kotaku boss Stephen Totilo asked Phil Harrison for clarification on this. And what Harrison told us might not please people who enjoy playing Xbox on military bases or other locations without Internet.

"There are many devices in your life that require the Internet to function," he said. "Xbox One is no different in that it requires, at some point in the beginning and at various times through its on state, to connect to our cloud and to our Internet. That is to deliver Xbox Live functionality, that is to deliver download content to you, that is to deliver some of the innovations around TV and entertainment that we showed today. But it doesn’t require it to be online all the time."

So how often does it check your connection? "Depends on the experience," Harrison said.

"For single-player games that don’t require connectivity to Xbox Live, you should be able to play those without interruption should your Internet connection go down. Blu-ray movies and other downloaded entertainment should be accessible when your Internet connection may be interrupted. But the device is fundamentally designed to be expanded and extended by the Internet as many devices are today."

And here's the bombshell:

Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks?

Harrison: I believe it’s 24 hours.

Kotaku: I’d have to connect online once every day.

Harrison: Correct.

So the system is built to work even if your Internet connection goes down, but you still have to be connected at least once a day to use it, according to Harrison. We're not sure exactly what would happen if you don't connect once per day—and that timeframe could change—but this doesn't sound good for anyone who was hoping to use Xbox One without an Internet connection.

Kotaku
So while it's not always on, its nearly always on.

Too bad it's ugly as ****. Looks like a Betamax...
The 360 S >

Scarlett. 21-05-2013 11:51 PM

The Xbox 360 S does look asthetically better, but I'd rather have a bigger uglier console if it meant that there wouldnt be any Red ring of death type of issues. The original 360 had RRoD issues due to it being so small and overheating.

Really don't care how a console looks. I'm not making love to it :joker:.....Honestly, I don't :p

This is damage limitation it was Microsoft that told the press about the second user fee and then after seeing the reaction to it after the conference announced on twitter thats not the case but have now told the press this utter garbled mess.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...ne-in-xbox-one

Once you install the game after buying it you can only play the game on machines that have permission to sign onto your xbox account i.e. you could take the game to your friends house install it on his xbox but then you would have to sign onto your xbox account on his machine to be able to play it he would have to buy it still if he wanted to play the game on his own account.

This still destroys the used games market although microsoft say they will announce in due course a way in which you could sell your games (which is expected to be an exclusive deal with a games retailer that means you can only sell it to them)

They can keep it i think i will wait until the thing gets cracked and patched in a way that allows me to use it how i see fit if i want to sell a game i have bought and played on ebay i will if they dont allow it i wont be buying it in the first place.

Tweets below the main one don't exactly back it up.

Those things along with destroying the pre-owned market is enough to put me off.

Also running three different operating systems at the same time sounds like asking for trouble they are trying to target too many markets at once it will be jack of all trades master of none.

How much money are they wanting for this thing?

Kinect is bundled with it.

And that article from Chewy is just ridiculous (ridiculous from MS, not Chewy :p). There are people that don't have the internet still.
Also, my ISP had a problem in the area last week. Having to connect at least once a day seems a bit problematic if something like last week were to occur again.

'effin MS!

billy123 22-05-2013 05:23 AM

I think i heard them mention that you could watch tv on it (if you plugged your cable box into it) but i can already watch tv and a sports deal with the nfl so you can bring up stats and clips lol nfl sucks and they hinted at a cod game with a free dog.

I never buy a console within a year of its release anyway and it really didnt tell us much but it was probably the most underwhelming reveal i have ever seen i didnt see a lot to like but there seemed a lot to put me off so time will tell but i really dont think ms wil be happy with how this is shaping up either.

Ryan57 22-05-2013 08:36 AM

It was totally ridiculous how they showed more non-game related than they did games. Makes it seem like an all new set top box that has an added feature of playing games.

Hopefully it was a case of getting this crap out the way and talk games at E3. Although, knowing MS, I'm not getting my hopes up. :idc:

It's been the same at Microsoft for the past few years, for the past three years at Xbox's E3 it's basically been "So this is what were bringing to the dashboard this year" and "Kinect games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Indeed. Ever since 'effin Kinect. But I hoped they'd get back to games next gen. So far, that doesn't seem like it'll happen. They have to bring it at E3 games wise.

Have a feeling it could be pricey with the addition of Kinect. That 'effin thing!

lostalex 22-05-2013 11:55 AM

It really is an ugly thing. It looks like an 80's style VCR.

It makes me want to buy a Wii U

Ryan57 22-05-2013 12:02 PM

I actually like the look of it, xD. And the controller.

Scarlett. 22-05-2013 12:05 PM

Do people really buy consoles based on how they look? lol

Peter Molyneux said last night, 'I sometimes buy things purely on the way they look'. :p

But no, I don't really care what it looks like personally. It's just better when something does look nice.

Well if a company can't even bother to spend money on design, then you can assume they also didn't spend much on development. Quality isn't JUST about aesthetics, but design and aesthetics does say something about the quality of a product. High quality products do usually bother to put money into design.

In this case, it does seem that xbox is just rushing to beat PS4 to the market place, and has obviously sacrificed a lot, just to get to the market first.

Well design is down to opinion. So I wouldn't say that means they maybe didn't spend much on development. The specs are scarce at the moment, unfortunately.

MS getting hammered in their twitter account. Denying everything their rep said. People are pointing out that it was their official rep and IGN who said these things.

https://twitter.com/XboxSupport3/sta...24786410278912

Ms have always been a very arrogant company but surely they must realise they don't have the power they used to have. They cant dictate to the whole market the way they used to.

Their arrogance is partly what destroyed them in Japan. That market can be forgotten about. This gen they had the consumers to begin with, but it'd be ridiculous if they think they can pull off a Sony E3 2005. Sony had tremendous power back then.

Ryan57 22-05-2013 08:00 PM

Ryse has been confirmed as a One exclusive. It was rumoured, but is now confirmed. So that's one of the 15 exclusive games. Forza also. And the Remedy game is probably in that 15 releasing in the first year of the console.
