its far more about snowflakes and faux outrage/media than about racism

id say, in mo, 99.9% of people did not really get it or give 2 fcks about it

He has more money and success than he needs. I'm sure he wouldn't care less if the beeb decided to end his show, and as LT says, it's faux outrage that is the order of the day

Of course it is, if you flip it around its a bit insulting to the beach sellers because their occupation is being dissed

As an Irish person the outrage is meant to come from you... :/

I don't think you have the hang of this outrage thing at all :idc:

Luckily there are those who can and do stand up for you when directly mocked. Being diminished as exhibiting 'faux' outrage shouldn't stop anyone from challenging a stereotype.

Irish people generally don't get offended about the Potato stuff, although if you really think about it, it is an awful thing to joke about, over a million people actually died during the famine and another million emigrated. I think alot of people don't really know much about it though or how bad it really was

*I do really like Potatoes though :hee:

It's not really about how many people give a sh*t though is it?

Something is either racist or it isn't, regardless of how many people care or notice.

Decides what? What's racist? Nobody. It's factual.

Like something being blue or green. It either is or it isn't.

Of course it is. If it weren't for the famine you think the Irish would still be associated with potatoes? :joker:

Doubt it.

Just as I doubt Alan Sugar was suggesting all beach sellers are Senagalese.

He was referring to their skin colour/how they look. Which makes the tasteless joke racist rather than xenophobic.

Yeah I know but the whole love for Potatoes comes from the fact that back before the famine (and why the failing potato crops actually caused a famine for Irish people) Irish people were only eating potatoes because they mostly only had tiny plots of land to try and grow food to survive on and Potatoes were the only way they could produce enough to live on. Basically, why irish people are linked with Potatoes in the first place was to avoid starvation while working for British landthievesLords

Yes it was ill judged, does it deserve all the attention it is getting, no it doesn't

I never said it did.
Like I said before I don't think he intended anything other than a harmless joke. It is racist, however. And he was naive to think it wouldn't get a bad reception in the first place.

Some , does it matter?

This 'celebrity' didn't mention potatoes, had he shown the Irish team with a few dead bodies and some rotten potatoes strewn around them then yes, I would be having a say on that.
However your glib reference doesn't inspire much outrage sorry.

According to Ancestry UK, I am 5% Irish. Who Knew! No one in our family...

Anyhoo, I'm outraged Cherie. Similarly, when I wrote a song about Niamh last Christmas for Eurovision and threw just about every negative Irish stereotype at her, she was outraged too.

Oh no hang on... she laughed.

Not 5 minutes ago you were suggesting I should be outraged, I can't keep up.

Of course hence why the blight on the potato was do devastating, we did not have a whisky famine in scotland to get a rep for drink

Of course she laughed, she didn't want a smack in the face.

You have a reputation round here. :worry:

Whilst we're here, let poor Kizzy out of that headlock! D:
