As I said, if they carry on with masses of complex season-intertwining stories, there's literally zero possibility for new viewers to join in. And once the old viewers start to drop off out of boredom of the repeated mess, the show won't have anywhere to go in picking ratings back up.

The thing is, and this is even when RTD and Moffat were in charge, arc heavy seasons are usually the best ones. If you intrigue viewers at the start with a decent overarching story that is clearly going to be told over the series, they'll stick around. The show has been back for long enough for viewers to get the format and that they are likely to get answers in the finale.

I prefer the series arcs. Kind of gives a series a purpose imo

Headie 10-01-2020 12:55 AM

Each to their own! It just doesn't interest me sadly, I'm not one of those who spends their time keeping an eye out for easter eggs or hints/clues to past/future references but if you enjoy that then I suppose the interlinked seasons are good for you!

The season-long arcs are good (Bad Wolf, 4 knocks etc.) but when they span across multiple seasons I just lose interest when they start adding more complex things but no real sign of progression.

Episode 1 consolidated to 6.7m, the highest of NYD

rewatching the superior Mater story arc and Martha really did that. like she really saved the world all on her own, was a caring kind hearted soul and people don’t like her because she fancied the doctor? David Tennant as the doctor was fine as hell I would’ve been trying to eat his bony booty too.

Queen of being the only companion not to get trapped in another universe, have her memory erased, get sent to another era or be converted into a cyberman :clap1:

I liked the first New Who Master arc, but I'm not sure I'd call it superior with how it ended with flying Doctor space Jesus pressing the reset button. The End of Time Master was done pretty badly too. To be honest, Simms' Master was probably best in the Missy era (which was the best Master era)

I don't think it was so much that she fancied the Doctor, but that she was the second in a row to do so. And even then Doc was moaning about Rose half the time.... she was wasted by being Not-Rose, but Martha probably had the best journey /development

I didn’t hate the ending lol.. not great but not bad enough to make the build up and final 3 episodes bad. Maybe it’s because i was young when i first watched it lol..

but to me it just always seemed like it would be realistic for her to fancy him? David Tennant was an attractive guy and he took her travelling around the universe. The only thing that i didn’t like about that story line was him still constantly bringing up rose. like the reason he didn’t like her back should’ve been because he’s a bloody alien and not because he’s in love with a previous companion.

I went into this episode expecting it to be kind of a return to S11 style, but it ended up being a really solid episode

Oliver_W 12-01-2020 08:39 PM

Yeah, once again it was better than anything from S11. It reminded me of an RTD runaround.

Greg! 12-01-2020 09:46 PM

Ugh this episode was far too preachy and on the nose.

MB. 12-01-2020 09:48 PM

I haven't watched any of this series so far, but I've seen people (non-hyperbolically, I'm sure) saying that this was the worst episode they've ever watched

Which bodes well

Scarlett. 12-01-2020 09:49 PM

There's been far far worse episodes.

Mystic Mock 12-01-2020 10:28 PM

I didn't really get what was to like about the episode tbh.

Heavy-handed preaching (I've seen other Sci-Fi shows handle environmental issues a lot better than this episode)

Underdeveloped Villains

Bad Dialogue between a few of the characters during the episode (Ryan and the girl that had Mummy issues being the most noticeable to me)

Bad acting from some of the actors in the episode

And the predictable dynamic and ending between the Inbetweeners guy and his Son.

I don't normally go down on an episode of a TV Show without giving out at least some positive comment towards it, but I really am struggling to come up with anything nice to say about that episode.

Well done to the people that enjoyed it, I wish that I could at least take something from the episode.

armand.kay 12-01-2020 10:55 PM

started off cute and intriguing quickly turned into a snooze fest.

Liam- 12-01-2020 11:26 PM

Great episode even if it was a bit Greta Thunberg

Scarlett. 12-01-2020 11:28 PM

It seemed very RTD era, like one of the run of the mill episodes, which is a massive step up from S11

Liam- 12-01-2020 11:31 PM

‘If I had some crayons and half a tin of spam, I could make you!’ had me

Tom4784 15-01-2020 11:31 AM

I thought it was one of the best episodes of this era. I think my only issue was how heavy handed the Doctor's speech was at the end, would have been far more effective if they were more subtle about it.

Scarlett. 15-01-2020 12:13 PM

Yeah, the speech at the end did step into overly preachy territory.

Marsh. 15-01-2020 03:05 PM

The speech felt like Chibnall at the last minute thought the theme of the episode wasn't quite apparent enough.

I hate television that assumes its viewers are braindead idiots.

Oliver_W 15-01-2020 05:40 PM

I think the Planet of the Apres revelation could have been done better. Maybe they could have seen a sign for Gloucester Road Tube Station,, something we'd know is from Earth instantly.

Also the mother-daughter thing confused me. I thought the mother was just a security guard or something, I must have missed the bit where destroying the resort was a revenge?
