The 'Chancellor' had no credibility before and what does that u-turn make him now?

Worse than useless.

bots 03-10-2022 07:21 AM

it was scrapped because it was unpopular with everyone except truss and the chancellor and they knew it would bring them down, not because it was a "distraction"

Kay Burley
claims it was Chris Philp MP
who suggested it,

She would not let him go.

He did not like the way she set him up.

The Chancellor really now has little credibility.
If he is seen not to think things through properly and to consult.

Then in a moment scrap a policy he and the PM stated as totally right.

That is unlikely to give the impression of competence plus also to leave the view of poor commitment too as to the market forces.

What an absolute shambles.

According to Truss she said only yesterday, it was the CHANCELLOR'S policy.
She said it WASN'T even discussed with other Cabinet MPs.

This was supposed to make the government look more competent electing this waste of political space Truss.

Hers and her appointed Chancellor's judgement looking extremely poor at best.

Your first line is a very worrying fact re Truss as PM.

I don't know where to start as to what's more worrying.
Truss not able to state facts.
Or the Chancellor in his mini budget acting on the whim of a assistant to him and then making firm policy on that.

Looks extremely shambolic, badly thought about and incompetent.

they thought people would accept it because they were getting help with their energy bills, so basically distracting the population while they gave their pals a back hander. That's the reality

Even a drop down to 44, alongside the 20 to 19, would have just drawn eyerolls and comments like "typical Tories". But scrapping it all together was just suicidal.

Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng has said he "gets how it looks" after it emerged he had attended a champagne reception with City of London financiers on the day of the mini-budget.

He told LBC this morning that "with hindsight it probably wasn't the best day to go" to the Tory party event, which he added had been organised "a few weeks" prior to his tax cuts announcement on 23 September.

Political opponents have called for an official inquiry, following reports in the Sunday Times that he attended a private champagne reception with hedge fund managers who were set to profit from a collapse in the value of the pound that accompanied his tax-cutting plans.

The paper reported the drinks were held at the Chelsea home of a financier, where Kwarteng was alleged to have been "egged on" to commit to his plan for £45bn of unfunded tax cuts.
