The British commentariat, which doesn’t know much about French politics, is
mesmerised and delighted by the fact the Left came first. It was quite a
surprise.

But the bigger political picture is that France how has a hopelessly hung
parliament from which it will be very difficult to create a stable government
that will last. In that respect we’re back to the Fourth Republic (look it up). It
managed 21 governments in 12 years!!

The bond markets will be over the moon at the prospect. Not. Let’s see what
happens to OATS (French gilts) tomorrow.

Some pertinent facts:

1. A huge chunk of the Left New Popular Front is just as objectionable as the
National Rally.
2. The NPF was cobble together at the last minute and might not last a month never mind create a coalition.
3. Hard to see how the Macron centrists could come to a sensible
arrangement with the NPF. But to split it might leave any coalition short of a majority.
4. France’s ability to form a government now suspect.
5. The National Rally is the big loser of the night but even that doesn’t change the fact that
6. Macron is a busted flush.

Just watch this space.

French Jews stark warning

Prominent French Jews issue alarm bells over the antisemitic far-left
achieving victory in the parliamentary elections.

Paris Chief Rabbi Moshe Sebbag:

“It is clear today that there is no future for Jews in France. I tell everyone
who is young to go to Israel or a more secure country.”

French Jewish Philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy:

“The left is once again kidnapped by the infamous Melenchon. Divisive
language. Hate of the republic on the lips. Around him right now are some
incarnations of the new antisemitism. A chilling moment. A stain: Continue to
fight against these people.”

Journalist Yohann Taieb:

“Melenchon’s victory is a terrible signal of impunity sent to the anti-Jewish
Islamo-Faschists.”

"Le Pen is HUGELY unpopular"

Didn't she just win the popular vote?

If you're gonna start accusing people of being unpopular, then at least start with the unpopular people rather than the popular ones.

Starmer has a popularity of 22% and a disliked by rating of 60%, and he's just won the biggest landslide in modern history.

Right wing neoliberalism and uber capitalism has destroyed living standards over the last 50 years, one left wing guy gets remotely near high officce and everyone loses their sh1t.

Maybe a fresh approach might help. The fear isn't that the left wing guy fails, it's that he succeeds.

Macron is the peak of centrism doing nothing, but laying the fertile ground for far right politics.

Nicky91 08-07-2024 01:35 PM

comparing France to Netherlands

i think we've done better with our majority of right wing government with a few centre left members, and a prime minister with experience from counterintelligence, antiterrorism taskforce rather than politics

Difference is there is that Le Pen is popular and Starmer isn't.

In France Today
loads of protesters were marching
against the PM Michel Barnier.

As he was not elected to be there,
they say he can be voted out?
