Iceman 06-07-2011 09:43 AM

Adele has had the two best-selling albums of the first half of 2011 in the UK.

The 'Set Fire To The Rain' singer topped the list with her second album 21, which has managed to shift over 2.6 million units in the UK since its release on January 19.

Second place goes to her debut record 19, which is still selling well over three years after its initial release on January 28, 2008. It has sold over 800,000 units in 2011 alone.

The news follows the confirmation that Adele's recent single 'Someone Like You' has become the first song to sell over a million copies this decade, despite only being available in digital format.

Reacting to the feat, Official Charts Company director Martin Talbot predicted that the 24-year-old's "record-breaking antics are not over yet".

omg LOL at 19 selling more than BTW in 2011 in yhe UK after 3 years :laugh2:

Adele's 21 has become the biggest-selling digital album to date in the US.

The 'Set Fire To The Rain' singer's second studio album has managed to surpass one million downloads in the US just a week after Eminem became the first artist to do so with Recovery.

21 has now tallied up over 1.017 million downloads compared to Recovery's 1.005m, while Lady GaGa's The Fame and Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More are expected to pass the million digital sales milestone by the end of 2011.

Just under a third (32%) of the 155.5m albums sold in the US in the first six months of 2011 were digital, marking a 19% rise in downloads compared to the same period in 2010, reports USA Today.

Billboard's associate director of charts and retail Keith Caulfield said that Adele is "not just a digital phenomenon", saying: "She appeals to older consumers, who will still buy full albums, and to younger people who may just buy a single track.

"She connects with people in a way where they feel she is a 'full-package artist' and you want to hear everything she sings."

Adele's 'Someone Like You' became the first digital single to pass the one million UK sales mark this decade earlier this month.

The singer-songwriter's first two albums 19 and 21 are currently the top two best-selling albums in the UK this year.

21 has now sold 7.71 million worldwide. Set to break 8mill within 2 weeks. With nearly 6 months of the year to go and christmas sales the album is set for incredible 2011 sales. Certainly over 10 mill and pushing towards 15 mill although that may happen next year.

In America

Adele's 21 is the first album to spend its first 20 weeks inside the top three since Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love, which spent its first 22 weeks inside the top three from December 1997 to May 1998. Both albums have strong adult contemporary appeal. Both housed smash #1 singles. Dion's album featured "My Heart Will Go On (Love Theme From ‘Titanic')," which won Grammys for Record and Song of the Year. Adele's album features "Rolling In The Deep," which is the front-runner to win both awards this year.

21's amazing billboard chart run;
{1}-1-2-1-3-3-1-2-1-1-1-1-1-3-2-1-3-3-2- (first entry: 12/3/11) 19 weeks

Rolling in the deeps billboard chart run;
97-84-69-64-41-26-13-18-25-26-17-10-10-6-2-2-{1}-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-3- (second entry: 29/1/11) 25 weeks

RITD is the years biggest single to date worldwide selling over 6 million.....including 4 million in America.

Iceman 17-07-2011 05:31 PM

21 goes back to number 1 in the UK with 19 back at number 3.

Iceman 20-07-2011 03:50 PM

21 on course for Number 1 spot in the UK again. And a mercury nod too :)

Callum 24-07-2011 07:22 PM

21 number one for an 18th week. Looks like Amy will knock her off next week though

Doogle 24-07-2011 07:22 PM

Lewis. 24-07-2011 07:26 PM

She's gonna be loaded

Zippy 24-07-2011 07:28 PM

She was already loaded from 19

which is also still selling incredible numbers

Iceman 28-07-2011 03:02 PM

Adele's 21 has become the longest-running number one album in 40 years.

The singer's second studio LP has matched a record set by the Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever in 1977, which also spent 18 weeks at the top of the UK chart.

In total, there are only eight albums that have surpassed Adele's run as number one in UK chart history.

Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water managed to tally up 41 weeks at the top back in 1971, while other notable chart-dominators include The Beatles' 1967 album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and 1965's The Sound Of Music soundtrack.

21 recently surpassed 3 million sales in the UK, meaning the album has now been certified 10x platinum by the British Phonographic Industry.

The Brit School alum has dominated the world music chart since the record's release back in January and has so far sold over 8 million copies of the album worldwide.

That's a pretty great feat! Will she ever release a video for "Set Fire to the Rain" or is she just gunna rely on airplay for sales?

Smithy 28-07-2011 03:48 PM

I heard she isn't even going to film one :/

Which imo is really lazy

CharlieO 28-07-2011 03:51 PM

I'm really happy for her. She seems so sweet and genuine. I also love the fact she is still so popular purely based on her voice and not controversy or her looks/over the top outlandish music videos.

I dot think so, she really doesnt need to. I'd like the Jools Holland performance for the video.

Jase. 28-07-2011 05:14 PM

No SFTTR video? Lazy times.

Oh, and that Digital Spy article is wrong. The album hasn't sold over 3 million. It's currently on 2,764,400. Dumb times.

Zippy 28-07-2011 05:15 PM

She should make a video for SFTTR.

she doesnt even need to be in it. Just something for music channels to play and give it promotion.

No, she doesn't actually need videos for this album as it's selling on pure momentum and word of mouth. But so far she's only made one video for it.

Zippy 28-07-2011 05:24 PM

Adele will be performing at the MTV vma's!

wonder what song she'll do?

she'll steal the show, of course.

Jase. 28-07-2011 05:25 PM

I assume she'll perform Someone Like You, seeing as though that's her next US single.

joeysteele 28-07-2011 05:27 PM

She is absolutely the best Female singer around at present, all her success is well deserved. Brilliant artiste.

Zippy 06-08-2011 08:07 PM

Dido loves Adele judging from yesterdays post on her Facebook. Lets hope she feels the same when 21 overtakes her UK album sales(Dido has 2 albums currently with bigger sales).

Turning Tables is apparently the fourth single, hope this one will have a video.

A good choice

Zippy 31-08-2011 09:59 PM

UK sales 2011

1. 2939800 Adele 21
2. 965800 Adele 19
3. 694600 Bruno Mars Doo-Wops & Hooligans
4. 673000 Rihanna Loud
5. 537000 Lady Gaga Born This Way

Adele on the verge of 3mill for 21 and 1 mill for 19(just this year). She really is untouchable this year. Nobody close.

and considering that top albums often sell 2-300k in the christmas weeks her final 2011 sales will be astonishing!

Iceman 31-08-2011 10:00 PM

that's only UK :o??????

of course!

Im guessing near to 5mill also in America now SLY is set to get to number 1 next week on billboard.

Shaun 31-08-2011 10:02 PM

I thought she was a little sub-par at the VMAs, but that might have been because of the atmosphere. It wasn't quite as spellbinding as the Brits or Jools Holland performances - maybe she's tired of performing it though.

I think it was stupid to do that song (I know why she had to). She'll never recreate the atmosphere of the Brits though, that was a one off thing.

well its been top3 since release in feb virtually. Moving up to no1 frequently. It's already over 3mill and now SLY has done the brits effect again and given it a new lease of life. Not that it even needed it tbh.

SLY selling huge but radio play has to catch up for billboard no1.

Well IIRC it takes about 180K to get number 1 and thats a minimum could be a lot more by year end.

Kazanne 31-08-2011 10:11 PM

We agree again Joey,I posted something similar then saw your post, lol.

Zippy 31-08-2011 10:19 PM

you can be no1 on billboard albums with around 80-90k these days. Adele has been selling steadily that number with occasional bursts of over 120k. Its all added up to a huge amount and is still gaining momentum.

Worldwide she's still right up there in most countries top 5. This album just will not quit. Its got 3 strong singles doing the business everywhere.

Smithy 31-08-2011 10:20 PM

she's on JR on Saturday after XF, hope she does SFTTR :D
