With just hours to go before the new Doctor is revealed, Broadchurch actress Jodie Whittaker and Death In Paradise’s Kris Marshall are neck and neck as joint favourites to take the role.

Jodie – who played Beth Latimer in all three series of the smash hit ITV drama – had previously been only fourth favourite to take over the key to the Tardis, with odds of 25-1 just four days ago.

However now Ladbrokes have said that she is just 6-4 to take over where Peter Capaldi left off, and become the first woman to play the Doctor in a series of the show.

Of course the fact that Broadchurch’s Chris Chibnall is the new showrunner might just have fuelled speculation that she is involved.

Jodie is now joint favourite with Kris Marshall at 6-4 – who fuelled rumours of his involvement with the role when he abruptly quit BBC One’s Death In Paradise earlier this year.

I haven't seen much of her work, but from the rumoured list of women, I was hoping it'd be her (I mean, who else was there? Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Olivia Colman?)

They've done enough building up to this moment for it to feel pretty natural now, it wouldn't have worked as well if the 11th Doctor was female (though if he was, I don't think it would have been a bad thing once people got used to it), but it feels just right for Number 13 to be female.

I had no problem with the idea of a female Doctor and I think Michelle Gomez had a huge part in that. She was so great as the Master she's the one who eased the idea in really for me.

But Jodie Whittaker was the last kind of actress I'd have thought of for the role.
