I am so excited for Tokyo 2020
|
Ohh and Zharnel Hughes just ran 9.91 in Jamaica to go second on the all-time British 100m list, behind Linford Christie!!!
(It's also a World Lead currently) |
I have so many Diamond League meets on my DVR now that I need to sift through at some point, but NCAAs update! I was super pumped for the women's meet bc the collegiate women are just on fire but they were running through a damn monsoon so none of the marks were super impressive sadly. Keturah Orji was probably a highlight since she swept LJ and TJ? Oh and Maggie Ewen bc she won SP and DT, but I'm still kinda upset bc HT is her best but she fouled out at the NCAA West meet.
The men were actually great though on Friday! Michael Norman ran 43.61 and then two Jamaicans from Auburn, Akeem Bloomfield and Nathon Allen, ran 43.94 and 44.13... all three of them are sophomores :skull: and then Rai Benjamin ran 47.02 for 400H :skull: Michael Norman and Sydney McLaughlin both confirmed after the meet that they plan on going professional now and forgoing the rest of their NCAA eligibility. There's a part of me that would've had fun watching them dominate the NCAA for the next few years bc they're both so young, but they've already done just about everything they could do in the sport so. OH omfg how could I forget Lynna Irby, true freshman from Georgia ran 49.80 for the 400 :skull: Georgia's known as a field event school primarily BUT they did have Shaunae Miller back in the day. And Lynna Irby already broke a few of her school records. If you're looking for your British news, Tim Duckworth won the decathlon! I think he's a plastic Brit though iykwim |
USA's have been happening this week and it's been pretty unnoteworthy bc it's an off year and LOTS of the big names aren't entered/scratching at the last minute (I'm still mad about Sydney scratching from the 400) BUT I have some random updates...
-Emma Coburn and Courtney Frerichs looked really good in the 3000SC -Noah Lyles was AWESOME yesterday, coming from wayyyyy back to run down Ronnie Baker and win the 100 in 9.88. He said he thinks he can run a 19.4 this year and I think it's actually possible? -Keturah Orji and Tori Franklin went back and forth breaking the stadium record in the TJ. Nice to finally have some American women who can jump -Deanna Price broke the American Record in the women's hammer throw and moved to #4 all time! She and Gwen Berry are currently the top two throwers in the world for 2018 and #4 and #5 all time, which is really cool for another event that Americans are usually not very strong at. |
British Championships are live this weekend on the BBC
Saturday, 30 June 14:45-17:00, BBC Red Button and online Sunday, 1 July 13:00-17:00, BBC Two 17:00-18:00, BBC Red Button and online |
LOOOL the latest Lynsey Sharp drama is her accusing Laura Muir of ~playing a game~ by confirming her place in the 800m for the European Champs by winning the British Champs whilst wanting to compete in the 1500 as well
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/44675623 This girl is a mess |
A really good British Champs this weekend, one of the best in a long time. Lots of high quality results, great weather and lots of athletes qualifying for the European Championships. Lorraine Ugen jumping a 7.05 WL in the long jump was probably the highlight for me!
Here's a list of qualifiers so far (those in CAPITALS qualify as reigning champion so 4 can be sent in that event): Men: 100m: Reece Prescod, Zharnel Hughes 200m: Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, Adam Gemili 400m: MARTYN ROONEY, Matt Hudson-Smith, Rabah Yousif 800m: Elliot Giles, Daniel Rowden 1500m: Chris O'Hare, Jake Wightman 5000m: Marc Scott 10,000m: Alex Yee, Andy Vernon 3000mSC: Zak Seddon, Ieuan Thomas 110mH: Andy Pozzi, David King 400mH: Dai Greene, Jack Green High Jump: Chris Baker, David Smith Pole Vault: Charlie Myers, Adam Hague Long Jump: GREG RUTHERFORD, Tim Duckworth, Dan Bramble Triple Jump: Nathan Douglas Hammer Throw: Nick Miller, Chris Bennett Women: 100m: Dina Asher-Smith, Daryll Neita 200m: DINA ASHER-SMITH, Beth Dobbin, Bianca Williams 400m: Anyika Onuora, Laviai Nielsen 800m: Laura Muir, Shelayna Oskan-Clarke 1500m: Laura Weightman 5000m: Steph Twell, Melissa Courtney 10,000m: Charlotte Arter 3000mSC: Rosie Clarke 400mH: Meghan Beesley, Kirsten McAslan High Jump: Morgan Lake Pole Vault: Holly Bradshaw Long Jump: Lorraine Ugen, Jazmin Sawyers Triple Jump: Naomi Ogbeta Shot Put: Amelia Strickler, Sophie McKinna Discus: Jade Lally Hammer Throw: Sophie Hitchon (Presumably Tim Duckworth, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Niamh Emerson will be selected in the Decathlon/Heptathlon) |
Also I think Beth Dobbin has become one of my new GB faves, she's so sweet and bubbly <3

Hayden give me the tea on GB's best medal hopes for World U20s if you're paying attention to that.
Team GB seemed to do very well at Euro U18s from what I saw! |
Ugh, waking up to find out that Caitlyn Collier and Sammy Watson didn't make the 800 final and Alyssa Wilson fouled out of the shot put final... USFlop

I do know that Jake Norris is pretty much locked in for Gold in the Men's Hammer. Jake Heyward is being pinned as "the future of British middle distance running" so hopefully he backs it up with a Gold in the 1500m, and Molly Caudery is another medal contender in the Women's Pole Vault. Oh and Niamh Emerson has a good shot at taking the Women's Heptathlon title if she shows the good form she's been having all season. We've sent a pretty small team due to British Athletics being bitches as usual and raising pretty much all of the qualifying standards higher than those set by the IAAF (for example we've sent a Men's 4x400m relay squad yet have no one running in the 400m whatsoever due to the standard being raised by nearly a second - what kind of dumb logic???) I suppose my interest in junior athletes has dipped over the last few years, seeing people like Morgan Lake, David Omoregie, Shona Richards, Yasmin Miller etc. all medal at World Juniors and have still yet to make their mark as a seniors (Lake in the Hep, not the HJ). But then I guess Dina makes up for all of that so <333 |

OMG this Indonesian guy upset the field and won the 100 but I don't think their country brought a flag so his pics with the other medalists was so awkward :joker::joker::joker:

Wilson at least still has the DT final and she's the top seed going into HT. Not sure about the 800 girls though :conf: probably both burnt out from long seasons? Maybe that explains our 51.5 girl who ran a ****ing 55 in the first round of the 400 and didn't even make the semis :skull: And I'll be on the lookout for those people! I saw Caudery take a few jumps in the qualifications and she looked impressive. British Athletics sounds like they've made some questionable choices though, that's a shame. |
The ~Athletics World Cup~ is on this weekend but hardly any of the big names are doing it as it's at such an awkward time during the season  It's the first time it's been done I see it flopping tbh
|
And there's a Diamond League meet the same weekend I think? ****ty scheduling!
IDK who's even doing it for USA yet except I think Devon Allen said earlier he wanted to bc he's shamelessly trying to make money this year since there's no championships :joker: |

AND it's not on any of the free UK channels because it clashes with the World Cup final and Wimbledon final :joker: What a shambles |
OMG first 3000SC heat had a Turkish runner slip on the wet track, slide into the barrier, and then cause like a seven-person pileup where people ran straight into the barrier and had to crawl over :joker::joker::joker:
|
Ukraine's Alina Shukh is OUT of the Heptathlon :o she won JT last night and was a fave to win the Heptathlon as well but she pulled up during her fifth throw last night with an injury and then passed on her sixth. She ran hurdles today but then is scratching from high jump.
This certainly helps Nimah though? |
The Chinese girl who was second seed in HT fouled out in the qualifications :o if you remove her then Alyssa Wilson has the top three throws in the world this year so good news for her.
|
YES Tara Davis hit her Q with a 6.40
