Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly has admitted that she felt a "huge" responsibility when filming her character's miscarriage storyline.

The actress's alter ego Becky McDonald will next week tell screen husband Steve (Simon Gregson) that she has lost their first child.

Speaking of the plot's challenging nature, Kelly told the soap's official website: "It's definitely been the hardest thing I've done since I've been here. I think the responsibility to do it well that you feel is huge."

She continued: "I've just got another six scripts - it just goes from bad to worse [for Becky]. I sat and read them last night and wept. It's just awful.

"She can't really put up any barriers about this - it's the worst thing that's ever happened. She goes from being a girl to a woman, I think. I'm just devastated for her as after three and a half years you become attached to your character.

"I'm finding it hard but I'm enjoying the challenge and that's what I love about this job the most."

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Becky will consider adoption after being told that she will never be able to carry a baby to full term.

The smile is soon knocked off her face though when Carla presents her with a mop and tells her to get scrubbing.

Kelly finds it hilarious even though she lost the bet and takes great pleasure in belittling her in front of the rest of the factory. However, Teresa gets stuck in and leaves the place shining like a new pin, which gets right on Kelly's wick who then resorts to pouring the contents of the tea club all over the floor.

Unable to control herself any more, Teresa sets about Kelly with her mop and the pair have to be pulled apart by boss Carla. Teresa gets the push but after a grovelling apology manages to get her job back.

With them both now working in the factory, we can only wonder whether Underworld is going to be big enough for two of the biggest gobs on the Street.

Strange.....I remember suggesting Underworld getting a cleaner to Kim Crowther in the live webchat xD

It is quite amazing how Becky's character has developed since she joined.

She was an old friend's of Kelly and I thought she would just stay only for a while. Look at her now.

Coronation Street star Jane Danson has said that she finds her current plot on the soap "distressing".

Speaking to The Mirror, the mother-of-two, who plays Leanne Battersby on the ITV show, commented on her gritty storyline in which Leanne's son Simon disappears.

"You can't imagine how it would feel. It's a situation you never want to find yourself in," the 31-year-old said.

She continued: "Both [co-star] Chris [Gascoyne] and I are parents and we found the storyline quite distressing."

Danson added that she manages to "switch off" from her character's story so as not to feel emotionally drained.

Helen Worth has revealed that she thought she was being written out of Coronation Street when she learned that her character was to be charged with murder.

The 59-year-old actress, who has played the soap's Gail McIntyre since 1974, said she was "very pleased" to discover her future is secure, regardless of what happens at the trial.

Worth told the Sunday Mirror that she was "genuinely anxious" when the plotline was revealed. "I wasn't shocked, because it can happen to an actor at any time. But I was very pleased when I found out that whatever happens at Gail's trial, I will be staying in the show," she said.

The storyline sees Gail being framed for the murder of her husband Joe McIntyre by former neighbour Tracy Barlow

Gail will be arrested at Joe's wake at the Rovers Return and is sent to prison to await trial. Filming of the prison scenes, which took place at Styal Women’s Prison in Cheshire, was a sobering experience for Worth.

"I'd never been inside a prison before and we filmed on the remand block. On remand you are presumably innocent until proven guilty, yet you are behind a locked door in a real prison and treated as a prisoner," she said, adding that her character has the backing of the inmates.

"They were shouting out, 'Free Gail! Free Gail!' when they saw me. They all watched Coronation Street and were very *interested in what we were *doing," she said.

Worth initially joined the soap for six weeks and said that she has no plans to leave.
