Heh, another hilarious point about this. RATM are signed to Epic Records, a subsidiary of Sony. Simon Cowell's label is SyCo, a subsidiary of Sony. So the money is going to end up in the same place :joker:

I think it's more of the point of stopping XF getting to number 1........second favourite with bookies now and theres still a week left to do it...:)

Then wouldn't they be better firstly

a) picking a song that isn't with the same label
b) picking a song that doesn't contradict the whole point of the campaign
c) picking a christmas song

a) its a subsidary yes, its not for syco, he doesnt own sony so he personally wont benefit.
b) the whole point in using this song is to contradict itself.
c) I agree with that, would have preferred the pogues.

If Joe wins then I want the winner to get #1 <3
if it's Stacey or Olly then I hope the dudes doing the petition get it.

A) Sony is not owned by Simon Cowell. Simon Cowell will not be getting any money from this.
B) As I have pointed out, it's a viral internet group versus a veritable musical empire. Stop making it out as if we are all being brainwashed to buy RATM.
C) Like the X-Factor?

a) But Sony will. Sony benefit the most from X Factor winner, not Simon, so those who download it will be lining pretty much the same pockets.
b) Noone is brainwashed into buying the XF single, but the strapline to the campaign is "****** YOU, I won't buy you what you sell me" yet they'll download a song because someone has told them to
c) Well the whole point is to stop X Factor getting a christmas number 1, apparently because christmas songs aren't getting it any more

The whole thing would have been better using a well known song that pretty much everyone likes, then it has wider appeal. Rage Against The Machine is a random song choice, as though someone was flicking through music channels one day, seen it and thought "we'll use that one".

It's not a random song choice, it's one of the most well known protest song's of all time. I know a lot of people who watch the X-Factor might not have heard of Rage Against The Machine as opposed to true giants like, say, Aqua, but it is certainly far from random.

And again, it's not protesting the theme of Christmas song's, it's protesting The X-Factor and Simon's monopoly on Christmas songs. Nobody is talking about subject matter here. Nobody was protesting Girl's Aloud or Robbie Williams. Heck, John Lennon never wrote a Christmas song, it was a song about peace twisted to fit the theme of Christmas. Very few Christmas song's are actually genuinely about Christmas like for instance Rocking Around The Christmas Tree.

As for the money going to Sony and us buying the singles because we are told to?, well that's such a cop out really. It's just such a deliberately negative way to look at things. Do you think this campaign would have the same effect if we all each bought an individual single instead of rallying the troops to buy the one single? Do you want us to buy a single that was somehow released and put in store shelves by ghosts in the night so that the profits would not be going back to any corporate body?

This isn't about Sony or Christmas or anything. It's solely about Simon and Simon's show having a creative stranglehold on the Christmas #1 and taking all the variety and suspense out of it. Every. Fucking. Year.

It's boring.
