Yup, you only tend to hear about the bad things, noone would be interested in reading about a school that does things right unfortunately

InOne 10-05-2012 03:08 PM

The pic in the OP looks like prison food. Thought Jamie Oliver was meant to have made them all healthy? I remember in the younger days of primary school, the staff would walk around and make sure we were eating our meals

...every day I see what children in my school eat for £2..and it really is well balanced..I mean £2 is nothing so they're never going to get huge portions and there are always salad/vegetables but children hardly ever take them..I think I can count on one hand the children who eat vegetables...

..what worries me though is if school meals stop because people don't want them or they are not cost effective for the local authorities..then obviously schools will still offer free school meals to those who are eligable..but they will probably have to be delivered from outside of the school..and that will effect their quality so for the people who really do need that hot lunch...they will deteriote badly..which is very sad and wrong..

..well they do that in my school Joe..but children can be quite clever too..sneaking food into the bins or on the floor under the table when no one's looking..children are quite inventive

..I imagine that girl in the OP..had thrown the rest of the salad under the table because she only likes cucumber..those kids aren't stupid

Vicky. 10-05-2012 03:20 PM

Ammi...at your school do they use proper plates?

I have never seen a prison style plate used for school children before...seems wrong somehow though I dont know how :S

Ahhh just had word from the kids' mother(gav got a bit worried and wanted to know exactly what his daughter had on her school meals today... )

Today

Jacket potato + beans
Pasta
Sponge cake and custard

Then she went back for seconds...a ham salad sandwich

Wish all schools were like this

..yes proper plates..those trays went out quite a few years ago..they're awful
..and every day there is a salad choice or vegetables too..and the parents are always advised of the menus so they can plan when their child has lunch..

...I have to say though..the busiest lunch days..not only at our school but all of the others in the area are the ones where they have something like pizza/burger/sausage and chips...and sometimes we have to remove certain healthier meals..say pasta meals from the menu because the children refuse to eat them..and replace them with something they will eat..

..I appreciate what Jamie Oliver tried to do but in my experience unfortunately the majority of children/parents would rather eat meals or have their children eat meals less healthier because then they are assured they will actually eat them..and many children are not persuaded at home to try vegetables/pasta/rice so they will never eat it at school...sad

Their parents should encourage the kids to eat more fruit and veg.

No Vicky

Prisons use Blue Plastic, I think.

All that for £2? That's great value

Yeah I get that a lot of kids simply wont eat healthy, but at least the option is there I suppose.

Gavs daughter is the total opposite to how it sems most other kids are. shes constantly eating fruit and that (at our house anyway) and she tells her mother off if there is not veg on her plate for her tea :joker: We often have the mother twisting onto us on the phone about his daughter refusing to eat her hotdogs and chips until she makes some beans/peas and carrots or something to go with it. I think its hilarious...the mother doesnt. But she should feed her kids right and then she wuldnt have this problem.

£2.40 the meals are there.

But yeah, fantastic value I think

Mystic Mock 10-05-2012 03:37 PM

I like everything on that tray except for the cobs.

Also I think nobody should be forced to eat something they don't like, that's to strict when people do that to there children imo.

..only the free schools..they're a completely different matter..they're the only ones who will be run more like a private company and they're less accountable so I believe they will make profits..bu that has nothing to do with local authority schools...money isn't even paid to the school at all..it goes directly to the local authority catering division..in fact if anything..a lot of primary schools organise 'special occassion' lunches from time to time and that comes out of their budget..so they're making a loss if you like..
..it's not an accurate picture to think that the majority of primary schools profit from school meals

I agree, but no processed junk. They should have healthier opitons like fish fingers. That burger looks anemic! :o

Vicky. 10-05-2012 03:40 PM

Our teachers used to sit at their own teachers table in the middle of the dinner hall and eat the exact same stuff as we did at lunchtime. I wonder if the teachers in that school do the same thing, I doubt it somehow

Come to think of it, the teachers used to queue with us too...everything was the same as what we did :)

Ammi 10-05-2012 03:44 PM

..schools can't always offer an alternative when they're only say cooking 25-35 lunches a day..then that really wouldn't be cost effective..that £2 which parents pay..has to cover the cost of everything..kitchen salaries too...

...it's just not realistic

..yeah staff do have their lunches with the children sometime..I have to say I personally always bring my own lunch..but then I don't like a hot dinner at lunchtime..but the staff that do want one eat exactly the same as the children and they all say it's quite nice lol
