I don't like agreeing with Gary Neville because he annoys me. :hehe:

Hell, the whole invention of the Premier League was to line up the pockets of some and milk football for all it’s worth. I’m a United fan who’s benefited most from the premier league, but let’s call a spade a spade. The likes of Sky, BT etc and their reactions has been embarrassing.

The premier league didn't destroy competition though, that's the fundamental difference.

I don't think the super league can be stopped. I think we are hearing lots of words in opposition to it, but it will all amount to nothing. The super league requires a global audience, it's not interested in local fans, it doesn't need them.

When TV rights are auctioned, sky and BT sport will be in there bidding, because if they don't, someone else will take it and they wont want to lose out on that revenue

The government can't do anything if the teams move their HQ's out of the country. If they don't need the local fans in the new model, they don't need to be based in the original locations either. They have the brands, thats all they need

I expect Man City to pull out soon as they were backed into a corner and rumour has it all 3 Italian teams are having second thoughts

have we seen Florentino's interview?

Quote:

"Football needs to develop, just like companies and people. Football has to adapt to the times we live in. Football is losing appeal, you can tell by the ratings and the television rights. Something had to be done. We are all ruined," the Real Madrid and Super League chairman continued. "Football is a global sport and these 12 clubs, and a few more, have fans all over the world. Television needs to change to adapt. Young people are no longer interested in football. Why not? It lacks quality in certain matches. They have other ways to have fun. With every change, there are always people who resist. What's so attractive about this league? Matches between top clubs, the league, more revenue. I am not the owner of Real Madrid, this is a football club and we are doing this because football is in a critical situation at the moment."
Quote:

"A Barcelona - Manchester United is much more interesting than a Manchester United game against a more modest club in the Champions League. What do people around the world want? We have fans all over the world. They generate revenue. And that revenue is for everyone. This is a pyramid. If the top tier has money... But not if there's no revenue. One of the main reasons for creating this league is that we want to save football, in general. We want to introduce this as soon as possible. We are going to sit down with UEFA and FIFA. I don't know why they're so angry. UEFA was working on a new model that, first of all, I didn't understand much about, and secondly, it didn't provide the necessary revenue to save football. And by that, I mean saving everyone. We just want to make sure that football is saved over the next 20 years. That everyone doesn't have to worry. The situation is dramatic."
Quote:

"Footballers are under threat," Pérez said, referring to possible penalties for participating in the Super League. 'The footballers don't have to worry, that's not going to happen. But UEFA needs to be transparent, they don't have a good image and they have to want to engage in dialogue. They shouldn't come up with threats. No one understands their new model and they say they want to start in 2024. We will be dead in 2024," the Spaniard stressed. "There are clubs that lose hundreds of millions. UEFA has not been transparent. It's over. UEFA's monopoly is over. Everyone believes that football will go bankrupt in the current way. We are not being thrown out of the Champions League. I firmly believe that. And not from LaLiga either, absolutely not. Why would the Super League be worse? If clubs get stronger, for example, the Premier League will also get stronger. Everyone. The better the games, the more interesting. The Champions League is only interesting from the quarter-finals. Matches against modest clubs are not attractive enough."
some of important bits

he makes some strong and valid points tbh

Real Madrid and Barcelona have been mismanaged running up huge mountains of debt, unrelated to the pandemic, they have been spending beyond their means for years.

Man City don't have financial concerns, they are doing very well, they have an owner with a limitless supply of cash. Man City will not go bust, PSG will not go bust, Man United will not go bust .... The guy is trying to save his own ass

Cherie 20-04-2021 07:55 AM

I don't disagree that a Barcelona v Manchester United game is more attractive than one with a more modest Club although that said it depends on the Club involved and there have been some terrific giant killing matches in the past, the point is it is no more than a friendly if neither Man U or Barcelona suffer any consequences from losing a match? how would you respond to that Nicky, they can both go for nil nil, or one could hammer the other one off the park every match, but they will both be still there the following season, so a friendly no less

it sounds incredibly boring, the same teams playing each other all the time more or less, it's exciting now because these teams don't meet up very often, if we were looking at them playing each other regularly where would the hype be, I don't get it at all

Statement from Everton :clap1:

The strong statement is the first official word from any of the 14 clubs and does not hold back, saying: "Everton is saddened and disappointed to see proposals of a breakaway league pushed forward by six clubs.

"Six clubs acting entirely in their own interests.

"Six clubs tarnishing the reputation of our league and the game.

"Six clubs choosing to disrespect every other club with whom they sit around the Premier League table.

"Six clubs taking for granted and even betraying the majority of football supporters across our country and beyond.

"At this time of national and international crisis - and a defining period for our game - clubs should be working together collaboratively with the ideals of our game and its supporters uppermost.

"Instead, these clubs have been secretly conspiring to break away from a football pyramid that has served them so well.

"And in that Pyramid Everton salutes EVERY club, be it Leicester City, Accrington Stanley, Gillingham, Lincoln City, Morecambe, Southend United, Notts County and the rest who have, with their very being, enriched the lives of their supporters throughout the game's history. And vice versa.

"The self-proclaimed Super Six appear intent on disenfranchising supporters across the game - including their own - by putting the very structure that underpins the game we love under threat.

"The backlash is understandable and deserved – and has to be listened to.

"This preposterous arrogance is not wanted anywhere in football outside of the clubs that have drafted this plan.

"On behalf of everyone associated with Everton, we respectfully ask that the proposals are immediately withdrawn and that the private meetings and subversive practises that have brought our beautiful game to possibly its lowest ever position in terms of trust end now.

"Finally we would ask the owners, chairmen, and Board members of the six clubs to remember the privileged position they hold – not only as custodians of their clubs but also custodians of the game. The responsibility they carry should be taken seriously.

"We urge them all to consider what they wish their legacy to be."

I don't know how Tottenham have the nerve to call themselves an elite club when is the last time they won anything

Leicester have more right of a shot at the elite then they do

Aston Villa have been champions of Europe more times than Arsenal, City and Spurs combined; Nottingham Forest have won more than all bar Liverpool and United. Tottenham have won one League Cup in 22 years.
