I've always been led to believe that "it's OK to slip up so long as you correct and apologise" ?
Only saying this because I think... and I mean come on... you did slip here and it is because Sam Smith quite irrefutably presents as male whatever the "chosen" pronoun, and that should be OK (supposedly) so long as you say "sorry, my bad".
But... there's an obvious hesitance (fear?) of admitting that you did this, I presume because it gives legs to the (obvious truth) that people are likely to make these "gendering errors" in the current gender climate and (perhaps) a worry that it exposes the inherent problems that come with "chosen pronouns" as a linguistic concept. You seem to be afraid of admitting that it was a genuine slip because Sam Smith is clearly biologically male. The excuse that "it was a pointed direct response to someone else misgendering, not me" is so extremely flimsy it's barely worth considering.
I can only assume that this is because you know fine well that often the reaction to even unintended misgendering is not kind nor understanding, so you're trying to reject the notion that you just did it in this thread. Even though everyone can see that's what happened.
