Jesus, that's chilling to read. What a psychopath

Two teenagers blaming each other for the “frenzied” murder of Brianna Ghey in a Warrington park were “in it together”, jurors have been told before starting their deliberations.

The 16-year-old was stabbed 28 times in her head, neck, chest and back in Linear Park, Culcheth, a village near Warrington, Cheshire, on the afternoon of 11 February this year.

Two teenagers, identified only as girl X and boy Y, have been on trial for her murder for over three weeks and each blames the other for the murder.

A jury at Manchester crown court was warned on Tuesday not to be tempted to “try to find an explanation” for the killing.

In her closing speech, the prosecuting KC Deanna Heer told jurors: “You may find it hard to fathom how two children could behave the way they did. The temptation might be to try and find an explanation for what they did and why. They are only children after all.
“But in a criminal case the prosecution doesn’t have to prove why a crime is committed, only that it has been. In murder cases in particular we sometimes never know why a crime is committed … Don’t be tempted to try and work out what they would do what they did.”

She told the jury they do not have to decide who actually stabbed Brianna in order to find both children guilty of murder.

Heer said they “may well conclude” that the boy inflicted at least some of the stab wounds using a hunting knife he bought for £13.50 on a skiing holiday six weeks before the killing. Brianna’s blood was found on his coat and shoes, as well as on the knife, the court has heard.

Meanwhile, Girl X’s barrister, Richard Pratt KC told the jury: “There’s not even so much as a microscopically observable droplet of blood on Girl X’s jacket or her shoes. There’s not a cell of Girl X’s DNA on anything incriminating in this case.”

But Heer reminded the jury that a forensic scientist, Jane Roughley, had told the court it was “entirely possible that Girl X had stabbed Brianna at least once, either before her blood started to flow or after it had started to flow.”

The prosecutor also suggested that Girl X may have used Y as her “hitman”, reminding them that she had once referred to her co-accused as a Tesco John Wick, a budget version of the assassin played by Keanu Reeves in the Hollywood film franchise. “You may think that’s why she referred to Y in that way, because he was her hitman,” Heer said.

Heer told the jury that the teenagers were the only suspects, adding: “The evidence suggests that they both participated in Brianna’s murder in the following ways: firstly, they both encouraged the other to kill Brianna. Secondly they both contributed to a plan to kill Brianna. Thirdly, they both played a part in carrying out the plan. And fourthly, after they had killed her they both took steps to conceal and cover up their guilt.”

She added: “The evidence suggests from first to last these two defendants were in it together.”

The trial continues.

Can't see any other verdict for this pair than murder, its just a question of how long they will get

bots 18-12-2023 06:23 PM

it will be a single digit sentence

Niamh. 18-12-2023 06:24 PM

Yes they clearly did it together, unfortunately because of their age I bet they'll get a light sentence

Oliver_W 18-12-2023 07:25 PM

Christ, even if they didn't target her specifically for being trans, they're clearly sick and twisted individuals. Thrown them away and lock up the key. Preferably in some kind of mental unit - they're either literal psychopaths, or just so evil they should be treated as such.

bots 18-12-2023 07:40 PM

kids are always given the opportunity for rehabilitation, no matter how serious the crime they committed so it will be a single digit sentence

…I know the judge has said that it will be a life sentence but for the family/loved ones, it will be about how much of that life sentence will be served in prison now…I don’t think the verdict was going to ever be anything other than guilty but that’s just the first step for them and I’m imagining that they’re holding their breath until this reaches its final conclusion…

Ammi 20-12-2023 03:23 PM

…everyone involved in the trial outside of the families and loved ones as well…how incredibly difficult this will have been to have lived it each day in the courtroom…/…I presume their is all the appropriate support they’ll need also…

I wonder if the judge will name the murderers, they've done that before when the crime is particularly horrific

Outside court, Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, said she was glad the two would spend many years in prison.

She said: “Prior to the trial, I have had moments where I felt sorry for the defendants because they have ruined their own lives as well as ours.

“But now, knowing the true nature of the two and seeing neither display an ounce of remorse for what they have done to Brianna, I have lost any sympathy that I previously had for them, and I am glad that they will spend many years in prison and away from society.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Evans, head of crime at Cheshire Police, said: “I’m not sure fun is the word, but I think they killed her because they wanted to prove that they could, or that sort of thirst for killing. I don’t think there was any motive behind it so possibly, fun? Enjoyment is the right word.”

Mr Evans also branded the killers arrogant believing they would not be caught as girl X claimed the local police were “shite”.

when are they being sentenced?

Ammi 20-12-2023 07:17 PM

When will Brianna Ghey’s killers be sentenced and will they be named?

NOW that two youths have been convicted of murdering Brianna Ghey, attention will turn to sentencing.

The pair, both aged 16, but aged 15 at the time of the killing, are still the subject of reporting restrictions due to their age, preventing them from being named.

They have been refereed to during coverage of the trial as girl X, from Warrington, and boy Y, from Leigh.

Both denied a charge of murdering Brianna Ghey, a 16-year-old transgender schoolgirl from Birchwood, but were found guilty.

The verdicts came after a four-week trial, and after four hours and 40 minutes of deliberations by a jury of seven men and five women.

Trial judge Justice Amanda Yip is due to preside over a hearing tomorrow morning, Thursday, in which reporting restrictions will be mentioned.

The hearing will also discuss any potential sentence date, expected to be next year.

Following the verdicts, after the court hearing was reconvened, legal representatives for both defendants asked for time for the preparation of psychologists’ reports before they are sentenced.

Justice Yip agreed but added: “Frankly, I don’t expect them to make a huge difference to the outcome in sentencing.

“But, given their ages and the unusual circumstances of the case, I think it is right I have all the information available.

“I’m very conscious that no doubt the family of Brianna would want this case to be concluded as soon as possible.”

Deanna Heer, prosecuting, said Brianna’s mother, Esther, would like to read her victim impact statement before the sentencing hearing.

She added: “They understand the court wants the further assistance of medical reports.”

A sentencing date has yet to be confirmed.

Mrs Justice Yip said she will deal with an application by the media to be allowed to publish the names of the defendants at the hearing tomorrow morning, and proceedings were adjourned until then.

I don't think there was ever a doubt they'd be found guilty, what will be interesting to see is how much time they'll get. They sound like complete psychopaths

She was fearless to be whoever she wanted to be. She wanted to identify as a female and she wanted to wear girl’s school uniform and yeah she just did it. It wasn’t a hurdle at all for her

Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, spoke of her daughter’s bravery.

She told the BBC: “She was fearless to be whoever she wanted to be.

“It wasn’t a hurdle at all for her.”

(Brianna) didn’t live her life as a victim. She was someone that was loud and proud and confident in who she was

Headteacher Emma Mills
Brianna’s headteacher also remembered the teenager as “loud and proud and confident”.

Speaking to the BBC, Emma Mills said: “There was never any evidence of Brianna being bullied within school or out of school.

“Brianna was very much able to give as good as she got in that way.

“And I think what was really hard was that she was portrayed in the media as a victim and she didn’t live her life as a victim.

Yes the Lady Judge

It does seem a bit like indulging morbid fascination but I guess you could say they don't deserve anonymity and it might also mean that lessons can be learned if more details are available to the public etc

bots 21-12-2023 12:54 PM

they need to name them so that they can be tracked when they are inevitably released in a few years time. In a similar way to Venables
