Yes Wife Leave
you spoke too long at the start.

joeysteele 04-10-2023 11:33 AM

To be fair a lot of what he has said re HS2 is right.
It appears to have been very badly planned from the beginning however.

Now he's on a subject he's totally wrong and acting disgracefully with.
The NHS and in particular the Junior Doctors grievances.

he wasn't in charge of the money when the project was given the go ahead, and ever since then it's been a political nightmare. It's only as PM that he can do something about it, and now he has.

That being said, i expect a whole range of big changes over the next 4 months, because the tories have to do something to give them a chance at the next election

MTVN 04-10-2023 11:59 AM

Pretty dull speech this really

joeysteele 04-10-2023 12:10 PM

Other than HS2 there was little of interest really or new.
Plus contradictions too.

PM Sunak key points (Daily Mail)

[The Tories will always be the party of small business
as he hailed his parents role in shaping him
Labour could not be trusted with the UK's security
He wants tax cut and will 'deliver them'
but pointed to his priority in tackling inflation
Brexit was more than a vote to leave
the EU - it was a vote for change
Keir Starmer 'can't be trusted' on Brexit
and wants to follow 'all the EU rules'
The Labour leader is the 'walking definition'
of the political status quo of the last 30 years
He is cancelling the northern leg of HS2 to
Manchester
The savings of £36billion will be poured
into other transport projects
A new 'Network North' will connect UK cities
The London to Birmingham leg of HS2 will
keep its Euston terminus
Health strikes are 'all about politics, not patients'
and 'not in the spirit of the NHS'
He will introduce a New Zealand-style
smoking ban with the legal age for
buying cigarettes rising by one year each year
A 14-year-old today will never legally be
allowed to buy cigarettes
MPs will get a free vote on the issue
in the House of Commons
There will be new restrictions on the
sales of vapes to children
He will do 'whatever necessary' to
'stop the boats'
Labour's plan for an EU returns deal
could see 100,000 asylum seekers
coming to Britain
He will change benefit rules so that those
who 'can work, do work'
'Every crime' should be investigated and there
is no such thing as 'minor crime']

no government can be trusted with anything, to suggest otherwise is crazy

Ah, I hadn't looked into it but just saw the headline. I thought it was a bit extreme to scarp them entirely

arista 04-10-2023 03:29 PM

From Guido Fawkes Site:

[No tax cuts

Bashed Starmer for “just banging on about Europe”.

Rest of HS2 cancelled in favour of £36 billion
worth of “Network North” projects.
HS2 will go to Euston
£2 bus fare cap in England will remain

New Zealand-style smoking ban, so a
14 year-old today will never legally be
allowed to buy a cigarette.
On vapes, “looking at flavours, packaging,
point-of-sale displays and disposable vapes”.
Sunak “won’t be bullied into believing ‘people
can be any sex they want to be”.
Double student medics and also reform
“workflows” of the NHS.
No more “rip-off degrees” at universities.
A-Levels scrapped, new
“Advanced British Standard” to “bring together
A-Levels and T-Levels into a new, single qualification”.
Which will see students studying maths
and English till age 18.

Teachers of “key subjects” to
receive tax-free bonuses of up to £30,000 over
the first five years of their career.

“It’s time for change…”]
