Could their performance be anything to do with the fact he's an ex Labour MP who was disgraced for sexting a 17 year old? Baffling candidacy tbh

Jeez, so that's three candidates who've disgraced themselves? Labour+Green and Reform?

Rochdale politicians are effed up...

I've been thinking about certain politicians' response to this result, and I think it borders on contemptuous for the Rochdale electorate.

It's all very well wondering what it might mean for their party, if it might be extrapolatable to the upcoming general election. It's also understandable to talk about how to might reflect on feelings of antisemitism.

But to outright call it alarming, and to suggest Galloway shouldn't even be an MP? He won by quite a margin, so that's potentially a lot of people they're pissing off.

Even if it was a vote to "keep the others out", it's still people's democratic voices they're shouting over.

arista 04-03-2024 09:18 AM

Yes around 2:30PM

TV news will show him taking his seat.

It is all Legit

I'm inclined to agree, full democracy either works or it doesn't. I'm happy for people to explore the idea that it simply doesn't and maybe there are actually better options - for example, I'm low key an advocate for semi-meritocracy where there are criteria that need to be met in order to run at all (so long as that criteria allows for a diverse range of candidates) - however when we have the system we have, coming along and saying "Yes we say you can vote but listen... you did the voting WRONG!!" is a complete farce.

George has now been Sworn in.

He has no hat on, for a change.

Not Corbyn
it was an Alba Party member with him.

arista 04-03-2024 02:22 PM

Now was Live Outside Parliament.

A long talk to all the press

But TV news left him.

Gusto Brunt 04-03-2024 03:46 PM

He always said he wore a hat to cover up huge scars on his head.

Unless he had make up on his head (no hat allowed today), I didn't see any scars.

…but also, surely it’s a mess/UK politics in general when ‘full democracy’ is being questioned as under threat etc…by a PM who wasn’t democratically elected…

arista 04-03-2024 04:33 PM

In the General Election
George may take Angela Raynor's seat
with one of his team.

That will be so funny

The election when it comes was going to be bad enough with Labour and the Cons stirring divisions in constituencies.
Plus lies at each other.

Now with this vile Galloway whipping up hatred and division.
This election is probably going to be a very dangerous and frightening one for MPs of all Parties and their campaign teams .
Galloway is the most despicable of the low.
A living nightmare to politics.

The real issue with the byelection was that the major parties were in an awful state with their local candidates being unelectable. To then say that democracy had failed is a bit of a stretch to say the least

The moral of the story is that they all need to put forward better candidates

To be fair, I doubt that a lot of the people who voted for Galloway would have been deterred by what Azhar Ali said. His words were the usual guff you could hear on recent Saturdays in London, or on Twitter.

They were probably more put off by his "apology" than anything else.

arista 12-03-2024 01:51 PM

He was Live on Parliament Channel

Not many in there

He is Having good Go at the Councils

He stated he would use his boots
to give them (Labour and Conservative) a big kicking
