Most factions of the Christian Faith do not believe in non believers being sent straight to 'hell', nor does most schools of Islam.
In the Christian faith believing in Jesus and living your life according to his teaching will get you into heaven, not knowing of him and living a good life will also get you into heaven.
In Islam there is heaven and hell (Jannah which has 8 levels and Jahannam has 5), both have different levels, after death and before the Judgement Day the person will stay at a level suitable for their beliefs and the way they live their lives. After Judgement you go to heaven or hell.
If you think about it, both religions have a fair, just and loving God as their head, sending people to hell for not having had the opportunity to learn about Jesus/Allah isnt exactly fair or just is it?. Though some preachers/mullahs etc would have people believe otherwise. Thats mainly to get people into their particular belief system.
