Do you watch the news? Even if you don't enjoy it at face value, you still have an interest in these things. For example if the woman who lives next door but one left her cooker on and burnt her house down and died, I bet you'd want to know all about it.

Because it's all in the subconscious mind.

Completely agree! I think we all have a natural curiosity about death, based on fear - but I don't think most would enjoy seeing others suffer to any degree!

So both of you are saying you don't slightly giggle or smile at the sight of someone slipping or falling over?

Its a shame I've changed my avatar thanks to the new forum :(

We all carry the ability to take pleasure from others suffering. Sorry, but that's just what evolution has given to us. Some people can control it in a certain way and others can not.

Without it, shows where fat people fall into wedding cakes on someones Sony Mini DV on Sky 3 would not exist. Without it videogames based around shooting the shit out of things would not exist.

Maybe - in some circumstances - but that is only minor. You wouldn't enjoy seeing someone suffer like in burning to death, surely!

Iceman 01-03-2010 03:22 PM

Bit stupid to throw everyone in the same category.....not everyone takes pleasure from someone falling over or dying......

Without this, You've Been Framed would not exist, and that is a classic TV show.

Well that was just an example, and a great extent of this. It doesn't matter how minor it is, it is still taking pleasure from the suffering of others!

Of course it is. That other person's humiliation and possible injury! You don't take into account that someone could seriously injure their back when falling over.

Yes it is. Falling over is suffering. Nobody wants to fall over. There are different degrees of suffering just like everybody has a different control on their subconcious.

Do I take pleasure from people burning? No. Do I take pleasure from watching stupid people meet their fate? Hell yeah.

Even if they do its still funny, especially if they seriously damage their fringe when they fall

I might find it funny if it was some cocky little twit showing off and tripping up and making a fool of himself - but I wouldn't find it funny if it was an 80 year old who fell over and broke their hip - big difference!
