Battle Royale was on 8.3 before The Hunger Games came out so their fans have obviously tried to vote it down it's still ahead of The Hunger Games though, Amazing.

Y'all just didn't understand it, I love Hunger Games but it's very simplistic in comparison.

Exactly. Thats another thing that really annoyed me in BR. The actual purpose of the game was never explained in full, and the explanation the film's opening gave was shaky at best. It just seemed a bit pointless, random and just an act of random brutality on the part of the government. It had no effect on me really because it didn't seem to have much of a purpose.

But when you read/see THG, and see all the Capitol people revel in the sport of it all, and how those from Districts 1,2 and 4 see participation as an 'honour' then it just makes the games seem so much more sick and grotesque. It highlights the brutality of the Capitol in the fact that the games are there to entertain people.

BR was just virtually random in comparison.

That's exactly the point of Battle Royale, is that the game is just a random bit of brutality. In the film Battle Royale is something that the government threatens people with to control them since Japan's citizens are out of control. Best way to make someone do what you want them to is to threaten their children. In the book though it's just to entertain the power mad government. The film and book isn't about the why though it's about how the kids react to the situation they're in.

The only thing I preferred about BR was that they had danger zones and the collars that would kill them within three days, so somebody HAD to win

Fair enough. That still doesn't change my mind on other aspects of the film, like the poor production quality (imo at least) and its bizarre soundtrack.

I just hated it. I really did.

Oh I forgot to ask

Spoiler:

What was the meaning of the beginning? You know, where that girl was in the car smiling, and there were all cameras filming her saying she's smiling and she's the winner etc?

I thought that would be explained at the end of the film but it wasn't. I didn't get it. :suspect:

Marc 04-04-2012 04:38 PM

Think it just shows how insane it makes you.

Marc 04-04-2012 04:39 PM

Though at one point I thought It was a flash forward and she was a girl in the class. But I must have been being ignorant :blush2:

But then why would television crews be there talking about the BR if it's meant to be secret? :conf2:

I kept thinking it was Mitsuko or Noriko throughout the movie :suspect:

Niall 04-04-2012 04:44 PM

I'm reading Mitsuko's back story. It's so sad.

The game isn't televised but people know of it so when there's a winner the media makes a big deal out of it. They never explain why the kids didn't know about it but I always assumed that it was meant to strengthen how disconnected they've become from the adults and education and such.

I don't think they used many filters when it came to filming it so it didn't look as glossy as a Hollywood Film would look. I quite liked it though, I thought it suited the story.

The orchestral music was there because it sounds like something that might be used by that kind of government, it gives them a Totalitarian feel to them which is appropriate.

There's a reason for everything in BR, it's just that a lot of it is up for interpretation where as in THG everything's kind of laid out on a plate for you which is why I like BR more, you can watch it multiple times and notice something new everytime you do.

Jords 04-04-2012 04:49 PM

I need to watch this :amazed:

Tom4784 04-04-2012 04:49 PM

The book's pretty good if a little tough to read at times since the translation is a bit awkward. It follows a lot more characters then in the film.

Oh okay. And I suppose that makes sense in the context of the story. I thought it was really odd how the government suddenly started to treat all the teenagers like this because they boycotted school. Idk.

Ah that would explain it. I hated it. it gave the film a really cheap feel imo.

And I suppose, but I found it really intrusive because in most of the scenes the music just clashed with the acting. That's what I thought anyway. It just kept annoying me the whole way through the film.

I might read it in a couple of months. I would read it now but the movie has out me off.
