Also, with regard to Alzheimer's .. Is Alzheimer’s disease a terminal illness? The American Medical Association (AMA) published a book in 2000: Diagnosis, Management and Treatment of Dementia: A Practical Guide for Primary Care Physicians. In this book, the AMA states: “Many physicians are used to thinking of cancer, congestive heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as conditions for which palliative care and hospice referral may be appropriate; most do not think about dementia in the same way.” However, the AMA goes on to state: “Alzheimer’s disease and other progressive dementias are life-altering and eventually fatal conditions for which curative therapy is not available. Thinking of dementia as a terminal illness from which people are dying over years instead of months allows one to focus explicitly and aggressively on a palliative care plan.” When a person with Alzheimer’s disease enters the later stages, especially after the ability to walk independently is lost, the average life expectancy is about one year. Of those persons who also suffer from fever or infection, or those who have suffered a hip fracture, more than half will have died within six months. SOURCE |
I think if we don't know about it then we can't be expected to not pick them on that basis though, and if we did then it's just very good 'luck' (as bad as it is to use that word in this context). I know there's grey areas but someone like Martin Crowe was given a 5% chance of making it twelve months back in 2014. The obvious thing to do if you really cared about winning is just to pick another 9 celebs like that, like Jools van der Westhuizen who quite a few of us have, whereas part of the 'fun' of the game was just doing sheer guesswork about which celebs might somehow die, or at least making some logical guesses.
Very morbid thing to talk about and accept I'm probs in a minority with that but there we are :ninja2: |
I think you are making a fair point, Matt. Although a few I have chosen since the rule was scrapped were given a slim chance of surviving more than 6 months, yet they stuck around a year or more, so it's not a given that you will get points from a crappy diagnosis if you get me.
But, I take on board what you are saying and want to open this up for discussion to be honest, because the game is only as good as the people who play it, so if there are a majority of people who prefer the old format, then we should go back to that. I'm open to change, so let's discuss.. :) |
6 points to Drew.
RIP Nancy Reagan |
(Joey Feek gave me 60 points the other day which was kind of her)

Excuse me!!!

we're rather scraping the barrel now with celebrities aren't we
*joins MTVN's campaign against the whole "just google everyone with terminal cancer in December" thing* |

Nah I think either we keep it as it is or ban terminal illnesses as it was before, any kind of middle ground takes away from the fun of the game I think. New Zealand's most celebrated cricketer is hardly scraping the celebrity barrel either...

*was referring to whatever a Joey Feek is*

To make things less complicated, we could have a no-cancer rule. Since it is probably the easiest to predict. So basically you can't nominate someone who has been diagnosed with cancer.
Thoughts? |

Yeah the no cancer rule sounds ok to me. I try not to pick anyone who has been recently diagnosed anyway

Another 54pts for MB... I see he's gone on hiatus to track people down before they've any reason to die.
