What should happen to them, then? Should they be separated from their parents permanently and placed in the foster system, while their parents are held? Or should the foreign criminals all just be set loose?
I think they shouldn't reach the point where incarcerating them is "needed", they should either be stopped at the borders, or dropped off on the other side.

Just to add that Trump sneaked a provision into his executive order that removed the time limit that a child can be detained for. Maybe fervent Trump supporters don't see it yet, but the rest of the world do. He is a nasty, egotistical ****.

This is the sort of excuse making that allows the latter to develop, though. If you actually take a look at history, nobody just suddenly springs up committing the worst atrocities. Things start small, and seemingly justifiable, and people let it slide. And then they escalate a little, and people let it slide. And then kids and their parents are separated, but people let it slide. Small, creeping changes. The slow, but continuous, removal of little rights and freedoms so that no individual change "seems all that big or bad". Until one day people look at the bigger picture and realise that it's ****ed up.

But the REALLY important part of the rise of Nazi Germany and WWII is that the German people who supported that government, and fought in its armies, were not "evil" people. The German army wasn't a horde of monsters. It was just an army. They weren't funded, fed and equipped by cackling goblins in caves... the German civilians were just... people. Who fell for a tonne of propaganda hook, line and sinker.
