I might be completely wrong here but wasn't that a belief debunked by historians?

It does make me smile that this current generation of young people doesn't understand that this feeling that you're going to be the generation that changes the world.... are at the end of a long line of generations that thought the same.

The problem maybe the people ‘drawing the line’ to be honest .. things could get crazy when you’ve got people naming the Colosseum Amphitheatre as it has links to slave fighting ..

Streaming services choosing not to air a comedy series on their platform is not the end of free speech.

It may not be the end of free speech but it doesn't say much about what the future of comedy will look like once everything is deemed offensive.

Plenty of offensive humour shows are still around, South Park looks at the outrage and shrugs and it keeps chugging on. It's so weak willed to be like 'Oh everything is offensive now :( Guess we can't have certain kinds of humour because an imaginary 'they' said so!'. No one is stopping anyone from having an edgy sense of humour or telling borderline jokes. Many **** comedians cry about how offense culture is killing their comedy, good comedians carry on regardless.

'I'm offended' shouldn't bother anyone with a spine to stick to their creative endeavors.

I really hope you're right but this could be the beginning of a really rubbish turn for comedy. The problem is, there is no imaginary 'they'. There are people who are sensitive to comedy. They're the ones who are happy this content is being removed. It wouldn't surprise me if these were the same people the comedians you reference are talking about.

A future of comedy without sketch comedy looks like a bloody good one.

No. Different strokes and that.

Sketches can be funny, it's the repetition that I can't stand.

Oliver_W 11-06-2020 08:17 PM

Monty Python more or less have the market on sketch comedy. They had virtually no catchphrases, every sketch had different "characters", and nothing I can think of has "problematic" aspects, it's just silliness.

for the first time ever in a long while i agree with you LT

i don't think they should be taking down anything from movies, series

i think all people who for now aren't aware yet of this racism problem, it should be highlighted via documentaries how big this problem is

and i mean global efforts then with documentaries, racism awareness meetings (but now due to corona that can also work via skype conferencing very easily)

i mean BLM and being against racism entirely are good causes to fight for

but taking away movie, series content is something i personally do not agree with, also the movies, series what is loved by millions of people for light entertainment purposes

And that’s exactly why the right-wing press are doing what they’re doing.

Fake headlines like “IS THE INBETWEENERS NEXT?!?” - It’s just another way of turning more people against the BLM movement. But then, those sort of people never really cared about BLM anyway.

To be fair, there is a danger nonsense like that could stoke a(n actual) rise in far right sensibilities. Stuff like looting, defacing monuments, and removing media just gives fuel to the fire.

It could easily be described as feminist .

I was rewatching Fawlty last night, I forgot how funny it is

I agree it could be called feminist, in a way  Basil's not exactly stupid, I think the "stupid husband" trope came a bit later, but he's certainly not someone we're supposed to like

I found it weird how the N and W slurs were being used for Indians?! I don't know if Cleese and Booth just weren't on top of their racism jingo, or that joke was that the Major was wrong?

I'm tired of comedy being stripped down by people with no sense of humour. I want to know when the book burning starts.

yes it really is one big mess when some don't get the purpose and concept of ''light entertainment'' :bored:

and i'm not here to defend stand up comedy cause some of those go too far, quite a lot of times

same here with ''Zwarte Piet'' with the Sinterklaas thing, has never been bothering anyone, and suddenly now in this PC world it has to change :idc:

same as ''chocolate kisses'' which were called ''N-Word'' kisses (not gonna say the word but hopefully you understand which word relating to black people i mean, but it's kinda also a swear word towards them so not saying it more for that reason)

there really also doesn't need to be a problem, if people start to be less racist in the world, more equality
