on the BBC .....

President Ashraf Ghani has left the country, reports say, quoting Afghan officials.

It comes as Taliban reached the outskirts of Kabul.

Vice-president Amrullah Saleh is also reported to have fled.

Mr Ghani has come under increasing pressure to resign as major cities around Afghanistan have fallen to Taliban militants over the course of 10 days.

We should have reassessed and not planned such a quick withdrawal.

MTVN pointed out Tom Tugendhat, the Chairman of the Foreign affairs Committee.

He describes this as Britain's biggest foreign policy disaster since Suez.
He stated the UK has ABANDONED the Afghan people.

In my view, he's dead right.

Too late to go back in now, although how many terrorist attacks will it take to happen in the UK and USA again now, before that may have to be risked.

Better to have kept things as stable as they were, than throw all away, the region again into chaos.
Endangering the UK and other parts of the World too.

It wasnt a UK decision, it was an international coalition that were in afghanistan. The UK doesn't have the resources to go it alone there

I haven't heard us even warning or moaning about the early withdrawal.

Do we just crawl and follow others leads???
Or do we ever use our own voice??

Or did our government fully agree with doing what the USA wanted regardless of moral duty to others.

Why would you send troops back in now it would be a full on confrontation

the usa provided the command and control and the majority of the force, so while they will listen to what others say, their decision is final because the other countries couldn't operate without them

Don't something like 99% of Afghanis want shariah law?

Talk about lost causes, why should western resources -and especially lives- be wasted on people who want to live under terrorism anyway?

edit: especially if the Taliban have been making deals with China and others, it's not worth all the conflict for people who don't want saving.

There are reports of gunfire at Kabul's airport, according to a security alert just issued by the US Embassy.

Officials have instructed US citizens in the area to take shelter, as "the security situation in Kabul is changing quickly".

Any Americans who still require assistance to leave Kabul have been told to register online, after operations at the embassy concluded.
