Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce has revealed Stephen Warnock was not in the right frame of mind to tackle Sunderland.

The versatile defender, who can also operate in midfield, has been heavily linked with an £8million switch to Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Allardyce held talks with the former Liverpool player before naming his side and decided the best course of action was for Warnock to remain in the North West.

The Rovers boss said: "He is at home because he struggled to focus on this game and didn't feel that mentally he was capable enough of giving his best, so we both took the decision to leave him back at Ewood.

"There have been no developments on the transfer front, but he didn't feel and I didn't feel that it was the right thing to do to play him."

Asked if Warnock could leave before the transfer window closes, Allardyce said: "We will wait and see what next week brings.

"But we haven't had anything near a bid we could consider to be enough, so he is still our player and I envisage he still will be our player.

Didn't rate Warnock when he played for us but hes proven that he's a good player at Blackburn.

16.51 Everton target Rasmus Elm has confirmed he has made a decision over his future, but will not reveal which club he has elected to join. The Sweden international is expected to sign for Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar

Martin O'Neill suddenly looks vulnerable

Martin O'Neill

Suddenly, Martin O’Neill has pertinent questions to answer.

Booed off on opening day, beaten in Europe, he’s now bouncing around the transfer market like a drunk in search of a kebab.

It’s too early to leap to conclusions, but a heavy defeat at Anfield tomorrow night, is the last thing he needs.
