A team in the Tardis is quite traditional tbh, and it's not exactly an unheard of concept in the new seasons either (Last season had Bill, Nardole and Missy, the first season had Rose and Jack, plus you had Amy and Rory too).

Also Martha was the worst companion, she had potential but they turned her into Rose 2.0.

Ant. 02-08-2018 03:11 PM

Like, objectively Martha is a good companion and I don't think she's bad, but I just don't have a lot to say about her, even though she practically saved the world and the Doctor at the end of Series 3. And maybe that's because I found Series 3 to be underwhelming but, yeah, not too big on Martha.
Can't pinpoint why but I liked her in Series 4, although her conclusion was... bad imo. Was Martha living her dream and making it as a Doctor? No, she was fighting aliens with her husband Mickey (and we all know why they got hooked up ). And I'm all for Martha moving on from the Doctor and finding love elsewhere, but that's what she's remembered for... being the Doctor's rebound (who led her on tbf), which got annoying after a while

tl;dr Martha was smart and brave but she was just unmemorable and the fact her conclusion is that she (seemingly) threw away her job as a doctor to fight aliens with her husband (with whom she had never interacted with beforehand what was the bloody point in them hooking up) just sums up her entire story pretty well

She could've been. And some of my favourite stories are from series 3.

But Freema was such a weak actress.

Martha in Torchwood was what Martha should have been from the very start, It's a shame they messed up her character so much </3

Oliver_W 04-08-2018 01:35 PM

I can see the idea behind Martha - trainee doctor gets swept up on the adventures, slowly turning into a solider. But having her be all pie-eyed was too much like Rose.

Martha worst companion? !?!

What about Adric!

glibberglobber 06-08-2018 11:39 AM

Doctor Who became a bore after S8!

We need more medieval themed stories!

Oliver_W 06-08-2018 11:42 AM

I don't see people's problems with S8 onward. Capaldi was my favourite NuWho Doctor, and he'll be hard to top. I still wish he was staying...

Because the medieval theme is so exhilarating?

It's not because of the Doctor... its because of the stories.... they are so poorly written!

Capaldi was like the third doctor

Davros should have been left in S4!

Glenn. 06-08-2018 11:47 AM

The Davros story in S9 was incredible tyvm

If we are talking about companions then for me noone will ever beat clara. I loved her so much! Her and Matt could have been a dream team shame they didnt last long

Sarah Jane's first story was in medieval times and look what that gave us.... :)

Plus 'The Time Warrior' is probably one of the best stories out there!

Lol

I can't imagine her with the Ninth or Tenth

Glenn. 06-08-2018 11:52 AM

Clara was great. A little annoying and too self assured towards the end but she wasn’t bad.

Would you rather have a full story of 45 minutes a week

OR

Would you rather have 4 episodes of 30 minutes each - one episode a week

Tbh I'm happy with the format we have now

The format of Classic Who stories is a tad offputting

It seems you have stories and episodes mixed up :hehe:

I think you mean

"10-13 stories a year"

or

"5 -6 stories a year"

Surely a 45 minute space for a story, titles and credits is a bit rushed?

Whereas a 22- 25 minute space for part of a story, titles, a cliffhanger and credits each Saturday teatime is much better?

isn't a show like DW meant to keep you on your toes each week, making you look forward to the next episode - will the doctor die? Is that a Dalek shadow he saw?

The only thing that keeps New Who fans on their toes is the Next Time trailer which gives most of the story away :p

Classic Who stories could be from 2-10 parts!

No, it's not a distinction I care to make right now. I was talking about episodes of Doctor Who without thinking about how they relate to one another.

S11 will have no multi-parters, but we're still getting ten episodes. Since S1 we've have varying amounts of "stories" each year, but still (4-)10-13 episodes.

Classic Who, as you point out, could have a different number of episodes per story, but there was still (approximately) the same amount of episodes.

Some stories are crap regardless of length - Daleks in Manhattan, Sontarons poisoning the sky, the recent Zygon two parter, Face the Raven ...

Glenn. 06-08-2018 07:18 PM

Splitting one story into multiple parts wouldn’t work with today’s audience. It unnecessarily drags the story out and people would get bored.

Is that why everyone hates two-three parters in NuWho?
