I once read a tinfoil hat type theory that said more men end up in jail because they're on average stronger, and can therefore be used for more prison labour :joker: Sounds bonkers but there may be a grain in there somewhere.

As an example, in the US prisoners get to work as firemen, that the state then uses in times of excess need or emergencies. So these prisoners, earning cents each day, are working alongside trained firemen, but when they leave prison, they are unable to go and do that job because the fire service requires an EMT qualification, but you can't get that if you have a criminal record. It's little more than corporate slave labour.

The place I read that theory was a hardline feminist responding to the "men are more likely to end up in jail, and have longer sentences" - I'm not saying her position makes what she said any less tenable, but I just wondered where her motivation for saying it came from, if that makes sense  she wasn't saying "it's awful that prison exploit prisoners", she was saying "this is why men go in more often and for longer".

Her reasoning is a little wonky to say the least, but the profits made by prisons off the backs of prisoners is the only way to explain the increase in prison populations, both here and across the pond.

Yeah sure, I'd say the custodial disparity could be more due to women appearing more "sympathetic" than men.

It could be argued that's why BAME people face longer sentences than whites for similar crimes. Jurors should perhaps be, not necessarily "race matched" ot the defendant, but a better cross-section on each panel might improve things.

The Daily Mail asking what has become of tolerant Britain after years of stoking racial tensions through Brexit...

Gross lack of self-awareness, or some sort of deliberate gaslighting?

the make up of a jury can be challenged as it stands, for example i think the defense would have something to say if the jury was filled with EDL members. At the end of the day it's in everyone's interests for the jury to be seen as fair as it stops results being overturned later

It will be middle class white kids receiving those sentences.

user104658 14-06-2020 11:56 AM

Not only that but the bored football firms are getting involved because they get little chubbies from the fighting, they have no real political ideology, and they'll keep hitting the streets for as long as they have an excuse. Their usual excuse (football) is on hold and they need to make themselves feel big somehow, right?

Oliver_W 14-06-2020 11:57 AM

It's not football fans who do things like that, it's thugs who jump on the bandwagon and use football as an excuse.

I forgot to add I don't necessarily think the ten years should actually happen in all cases, but if that's a guideline law then the vandals would at least face a trial, and it would appear on their criminal record.

Well exactly, they usually use football as an excuse but football (with a live crowd, at least) has been kicked into the long grass, so to speak, but these guys are hooked on that culture and have absolutely relished the excuse to get back out there. That's not to say they're not racists though. They're that, too. It'll be the cherry on top for them. But they'll fight with whoever gets in their way. BLM protesters, police, random bystanders... They don't really care.

Both, gaslighting and a lack of self awareness are both indicative of the right wing media.

It shows their history of sowing racial tensions. The history you said to TS wasn't true.

A display of empathy and compassion to someone who understands neither. A powerful image that summarises the movement and why so many people of all creeds and walks of life support it beautifully.

I agree, this is a knee jerk reaction, the establishment is crumbling but heavy handed tactics like that won't work this time.
Usually the right use war memorials to stir national pride to rail against protestors, that in the main isn't happening now.. we are quite rightly demanding some accountability.
