user104658 13-03-2020 03:22 PM

I had a stange incident at the supermarket... toilet roll aisle EMPTY... I see a chap with a huge cage full of 32-packs of Cushelle heading down there and think "goddamnit I'll have to grab one of those because there is otherwise literally none" - but I don't want to be seen doing it so I skulk around for a bit then head back. None there! The cage and young feller are missing... nowhere to be seen... none on the shelves. Now this was relatively late at night and the shop was pretty empty, and there were TONNES of these huge packs... so they didn't get panic bought.

My theory is that he had a van outside and he's stolen them to sell on the black market :worry:

same, I'm just using soap. I suppose if you're on public transport and out and about where you don't have easy access to a sink and soap then it's good

If you are stocking up because end of world is coming remember, rice is coming from China and pasta from Italy...lol

user104658 13-03-2020 04:31 PM

I think people might believe hand sanitizer is a magic potion. In reality, it's only 70% as effective as a 20p bar of soap and hot water. Soap and hot water (if you wash "properly", between the fingers etc.) is essentially 100% effective because coronaviruses have a protective lipid membrane. Soap breaks the lipid layer and the virus dies instantly. Sanitiser works similarly but isn't 100%.

Also people are obsessed with it having to be hand soap... shelves bare... but cheap washing up liquid will do exactly the same thing and have you seen a bare washing up liquid shelf?

However don't take LT's advice from another thread of using dettol spray on your hands. It'll dry and crack your skin and then you won't have to touch your face to catch something... it'll go right in through the gaps in your skin!

I'm going to HOPE this just means a large gin, and not a G&T spiked liberally with rohypnol :suspect:

Gav went shopping anyway, it was very quiet, plenty of loo roll [emoji23] they were low in beans, pasta and rice but it was all the own brand stuff they were out of. The woman at the check out said people went crazy buying stuff yesterday but seemed to have calmed down again today

Kizzy 13-03-2020 10:30 PM

I was so tempted tonight to go wild in the aisles for soup and beans but I was good ( only cos I don't get paid till 20th  )

AnnieK 14-03-2020 05:28 PM

They had to close an Aldi store in Salford because they were fighting over supplies and the police had to be called

Being honest, at this poi t I would cautiously recommend filling a cupboard with a few staples because it's getting harder to find basics and it's going to get worse. People are clearing whole shelves of things like pasta sauce :umm2:.

Also go early in the morning. When supermarkets seem to be "out" of some things its often that they have stock but it just isn't on shelves. If you go early you have a much better chance of doing a "normal shop" before the shelves get cleared again.

We did an online shop at Tesco but couldn't get a delivery till Monday,so it will be interesting to see if they have everything we ordered, but it was a normal food shop ,not even ordered toilet rolls or antiseptic handwash,I always have those anyway.I did notice at our local Waitrose there doesn't seem to be any shortage of things, so will go there if necessary.

Lucky! My local Tesco only has slots for 9 days time!

Well should be be in isolation apart from milk we could last 2 wks easily and my freezer which is not over large is stuffed to breaking point, we are both in the 'vulnerable' and i'm very worried.

user104658 14-03-2020 07:53 PM

My own panic buy didn't go very well, I spent £95 at Lidl but mainly bought junk and dinner for the next few days. My panic buy yielded two large gammons for the slow cooker, two bags of flour, and a couple of packs of biscuits.

 I might be doing this wrong.

Scarlett. 14-03-2020 07:53 PM

Just stock up on the bombay bad boys

hijaxers 14-03-2020 07:58 PM

Oh and here's a laugh ~ No vodka ~ on shelves except flavoured ! prob because they were saying on GMB use can use neat vodka to make a hand sanitizer ~ bloody expensive and what a waste of good vodka.

we told you this weeks ago, what you on about  This is what you get for scoffing :hmph:

Cherie 14-03-2020 08:12 PM

can I gently suggest anyone who runs a car fill up as well, because this might be the next panic buy

also check you petrol station shops as they have cereals and other things that are out in the main supermarkets

I didn't scoff I said it'll be like th'beast from th'east where we'll all need to panic buy because of panic buying. To be fair though, I was taken aback by the number of (sometimes bizarre) products that are vanishing.
