CAHILL CALLS FOR NEW RECRUITS

Tim Cahill has called for fresh investment to help carry Everton into the top four of the Barclays Premier League.

The attacking midfielder has been the heartbeat of Everton's impressive season but even he could not stop Chelsea lifting the FA Cup at Wembley after a 2-1 win.

Cahill will have an ongoing hip problem assessed over the next couple of days to decide whether he can join up with Australia's World Cup squad, but it was matters of a domestic nature that weighed most heavily on his mind after Saturday's loss.

Cahill said: "Hopefully there will be the investment needed to improve the squad.

"Now we have a good platform for next season. We have a lot of great youngsters to come in, some were on the bench at Wembley - Jose Baxter, Jack Rodwell, James Vaughan.

"We have a lot of fresh talent, and I just pray to God that all the lads stick together and stay here, and next season we can all come back and give it another good go.

"I've played 30-40 games, got my goals, and I aim to have a massive impact next season.

"My hip is pretty sore, but you get loads of knocks in football and you have to get on with it.

"I'm very proud of the lads, proud of the club and everyone involved here. The fans have been amazing and considering the injury problems we have had with a very small squad, what we have achieved is tremendous for Everton."

Saturday marked Cahill's second FA Cup final defeat having reached the showpiece event in 2004 with Millwall, whose League One play-off failure earlier this month was viewed with dismay by the Australian.

He said: "I am very passionate about the fans and the club that I play for.

"The last time I played in a cup final it was with Millwall and we lost that one to Manchester United.

"Millwall is a club also very close to my heart and I was gutted that they didn't get promotion after reaching the play-off final.

"I was dejected by that, and now I feel the same for Everton, obviously. You walk off the Wembley pitch feeling you were so close yet so far away.

"But we beat some really good Premier League sides to get to Wembley, and we finished fifth in the table. Don't forget that makes us the fifth-best team in the country and we pushed Chelsea into a very good performance to beat us.

"But we do not sugar-coat anything at Everton, we lost the game and we must get on with life now. Chelsea were the better team."

Maldini retired today.

Instead of receiving a hero's send off, Maldini was greeted with a banner that read: “Thanks captain. On the pitch you were an undying champion but you had no respect for those who made you rich.”

A banner commemorating Franco Baresi was also unveiled, indicating the fans' belief that he and not Maldini is the club's favourite ever captain.

“I really don't know [why they ruined the party],” Maldini told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I have always been straight, following my ideals, respecting everybody.

“I have not frequented the areas where the fans go, but not because I'm a snob, for I always have to show something because of the surname I carry.

“I only wanted to be judged for what I did on the pitch. There are some who can see this as a form of respect towards the fans and the club.

“There are also others who can interpret this attitude as a discourtesy,” Maldini explained.

When asked to explain what has disappointed him the most, Maldini replied: “The club's silence. I didn't like the fact they chose not to take a position.

Ever wanted to know what Dirk Kuyt thinks of his teammates? Well wonder no more after the Dutchman revealed all about the Reds' squad in an exclusive chat with Match Magazine.

Who is the loudest in the squad?

I think that's Jamie Carragher! He's always shouting at people and telling them what to do on the pitch – it seems like you can hear him from everywhere. Sometimes he's so loud you just have to laugh about it.

Who has got the hardest shot?

When Riise was here it was definitely him, but now it must be Stevie Gerrard! Daniel Agger can really hit the ball hard and has scored some great goals for us, but I think Stevie just has more power.

Who is the best at FIFA 09?

Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano play the FIFA games a lot on away trips, but I'm not sure who is the best! Hopefully they'll both let me get involved soon because I know I would be better than them!

Who's the cleverest?

Most people say footballers aren't very intelligent! It's hard to tell because we spend most of our time talking football, but I think Xabi Alonso is quite clever – at least he thinks he's clever anyway!

Who is the strongest?

The whole squad does weights a few times a week after training and Pepe Reina is the strongest. If there was a competition to see who could lift the most weights or do the most squats, Pepe would definitely win!

Who is your best mate?

I get on with all the lads, but I play golf with Pepe Reina and Albert Riera whenever I get the chance. Yossi Benayoun plays poker with us sometimes as well, so I probably spend the most time with them.

Who's the club DJ?

I don't want to big myself up but the lads always ask me to put my iPod on before games. It's probably because I'm the only one who has an iPod with me! I try to get a good mix of songs to keep everyone happy.

Who's the fastest?

We always do sprint tests at Liverpool so that's an easy one. We did the tests a couple of weeks ago and Ryan Babel was easily the fastest – even quicker than Fernando. I think he did athletics when he was younger.

Who is Mr Liverpool?

I think Carra knows everything – not only about Liverpool but about football in general. He eats and sleeps football and watches it every day, so he knows everything about the club. Steven Gerrard knows a lot about Liverpool too.
