Salt

It was good, but it was soo confusing, like Inception style confusing in some points.

Just finished watching Downfall. Loved it, I've been intending to see it for ages and it definately lived up to my expectations. It's recieved criticism for humanising Hitler which I think is nonsense, he was a human being after all, even if he was a vile, despicable one.

The Beastmaster (1982)

I know it's cheesy, stupid and badly acted, but that's exactly the reason why I love it, plus it's part of the sci fi/sword and sorcery "magic" of the 80's and, as such, it holds a very dear place in my heart even though it's probably garbage for anyone else who watches. Well yeah, it is garbage but it's so bloody entertaining. A big time guilty pleasure of mine, along with films like Krull, Conan, The Last Starfighter, Legend, the Star Trek films... etc etc. I could go on but that's an embarrassing enough list as it is.

That's all you really need to see to know how wonderfully crap it is.

I watch this film once a year. Forget about Stone's theories and jumps of faith and just look at this as a thought provoking piece of cinema that demands the viewer to sit up and take notice of it. You may agree or disagree with the director's approach to the material and the artistic license he imposes, but I'm in no doubt of the films power and billiance just on an artistic front.

It's stunningly filmed and edited. Just a superb piece of filmmaking, whether you agree or disagree with Stone's conclusions. And hey - if you don't agree I defy you not to look it all up afterwards. That's the brilliance of the piece.

Inception.

You have to hand it to Nolan: compared to the usual summer blockbusters that we have to suffer this is out on it's own in terms of creativity, ambition and style. That is doesn't fall apart under it's own silliness - I mean come on, it's pretty daft when you think about it - is really down to the directors ability to create a dynamic and absorbing storyline, with the narrative holding ones interest to the extent where I accepted his reality and suspended my disbelief, even in the face of such staggeringly crazy visuals and plot contrivances.

It's be no means perfect, and I think the general themes in the movie have been far better explored in other works such as Synecdoche New York (a masterpiece by the way), but there's no other mainstream director with this kinda cash at his disposal who would even dare attempt to get a film such as this made. That he has been given this licence from his backers is a real blessing and makes him one of the most important filmmakers of the last few years. I'm just a bit saddened that it adhered to the usual popcorn, thrill ride formula, particularly towards the end, but sure if you want to play with the big money and get your films watched it has to be done. Still though, a challenging and refreshing change to the usual crap we get at this time of year.

Oh, and Tom Hardy is a star in the making.

Paradise lost.... was pretty boring and not shocking at all. Peter pan was more scary.

Hunger - I thought this would be quite boring but it was actually good.

Piranha 3d - Thought this would have been better tbh, but it was still worth a watch.

Hunger is one of my favourite films of the decade. Absolutely brilliant.

I watched the Odessa File last night, which stars Jon Voight as a German journalist chasing after a secret group of Nazi's in Europe twenty years after the war has ended. Decent enough little thriller with a nice little twist at the end.

Toy Story 3...bloody brilliant

Inception - I thought it was good, I was confused walking out of the cinema but found myself thinking about for a long time afterwards and drawing my own conclusions on it. Which can only be a good thing imo.

Grimnir 04-09-2010 02:00 AM

last films I watched were all 6 Harry Potter films back to back over 2 days

Richard Harris > Michael Gambon

Lord of the Rings > Harry Potter

setanta 05-09-2010 04:32 PM

I actually prefer Gambon's whimsical and eccentric take on Dumbledore.

Tom4784 05-09-2010 04:33 PM

Death Note & Death Note: The Last Name. Great films although they aren't as good as the series they're based on, still they are a good pair of adaptations. I'm dreading the Hollywood remake though.

Beastie 05-09-2010 04:36 PM

ElizabethTown. A lovely little film!

The Other Guys - 8/10 - I read a few bad reviews on this film but thought I would watch and decide for myself, I'm glad I did because I thought it was hilarious.

That scene at the beginning where they jump from the building had me in stitches.
