Yeah, but even if they did do that, do you think they would be that popular if Kurt hadn't had a 'tragic rock star death'? Then they might not have been overrated, but now i'd say they deffo are.

lily. 05-12-2009 09:40 PM

No, if Kurt hadn't [allegedly] killed himself, they wouldn't have been as famous. That's a fact. But they were instrumental in changing the music scene at that time.

Well Ameican Idiot was when they had their big thing over here, if you know what I mean. I think that East Jesus Nowhere is a really good song. But I saw them live recently and they were absolutely amazing, that is what counts.

You a conspiracy theorist? lol

Stu 05-12-2009 09:42 PM

To be fair I think you make a very valid point about Nirvana, Lili.

The new Green Day are abhorrent though. So whinny and obnoxious! And all the songs sound the exact same to me, just with the chords going in a different progression!

I agree ive read a few books on it, I think he was killed sometimes then other times I look back and think hey hang on a minute this guy was clinically depressed and was overdosing left right and centre.......guess we'll never know???

Technically Dookie isn't "their old stuff". Dookie was their first major label album, but their old stuff would be the 2 albums they made on the independant labels prior to Dookie.

And International Superhits was released in 2001, so I definitely wouldn't class that as old... it's only 3 years prior to American Idiot.

American Idiot was the album which brought the new generation of fans in. Before AI, the fanbase was smaller.. mainly older people who were listening to them back in the day. The success of AI brought a whole new fanbase of people who weren't even born when Dookie came out.

21CB hasn't brought about many more fans to be honest. AI was the defining moment for the new generation of fans.

I find it amusing that you think the 'new GD' are whiney.. BJA's vocal style was more whiney back in the Kerplunk! era than it is now. He's actually got a deeper tone to his voice now.

Unless you are referring to the content of the songs... in which case, I don't really get how people can complain that they don't sing about pot, girlfriends and masturbation. They're grown men now. They are all over 35, and all have children of their own, so it would be effing laughable for them to still sing about stuff like that.

Nowadays they sing about things that are important to them.. issues that matter to them, and maybe I get it and you don't because I'm the same age as them (roughly) so I've aged with them, and I'm now a 35 year old mother instead of a teenage pot-smoker who masturbates..

If you get what I mean..

InOne 05-12-2009 09:48 PM

But I think most would agree that Green Day are not overrated.

Stu 05-12-2009 09:49 PM

I would definately class anything pre American Idiot as the old stuff. It's not really about timespan. American Idiot was a new Green Day in a new direction.

It's his voice in general. I don't like it when it's applied to these newer songs. He just annoys me if I am being perfectley honest. It's nothing to do with my age or your age. I realise the band had to move on. They did and well ... I think they suck. I think people give them far too much credit. Nothing special IMO.

eh then what the **** were you smoking and doing on the phone the other night???? this cuts me deep and hard :(

lily. 05-12-2009 09:52 PM

That's fair enough. It's your opinion. They have changed, as a band. They have progressed. Their lyrical content is totally different, and I personally really like it.. I think the stuff they bring out is always good.

I dunno if you've ever checked out any of their side projects Stu.. but you may surprise yourself and like them..

Nah, they are absolutely fantastic live, considering their age, their stage presence is just immense, he is as good singer as he ever was and a great showman. They deserve all the credit they get.

As matter of factly as you put things, given my opinion, I have to disagree with you.

People acted as if Green Day revolutionised the rock world with American Idiot. That somehow before that all music was just banging your head against a wall. In reality, there was hundreds of [better, IMO] bands out there who were always singing about political things, they just never broke the mainstream like Green Day did. Green Day don't particularly do anything sonically interesting at all at all in my book.

They aren't bad, I just don't think they are anything that special either. Age is irrelevant. AC/DC and the Stones still kick it up live and they are both far older bands than Green Day.

Guess it just boils down to opinion, once again lol

But I agree with Setanta, lets get to business

Ah I'm a wee bit tired petal, that's all, and Green Day never blew my hair back.
