Doctors battling to save the life of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher reportedly have no plans to wake him from the coma.

The seven-time German world champion has been in a medically-induced coma after he suffered severe brain injuries in a French Alps skiing crash in late December.

According to the Mirror, neurosurgeons at the hospital in Grenoble where the former Ferrari racer is being treated have still not revealed any date when they may try to bring him out of the coma, while some experts fear that he may remain in a permanent vegetative state for the rest of his life.

The report mentioned that Schumacher is still classed as critically ill following the December 29 accident when he smashed his skull against a rock while skiing, and medical experts said that the prognosis for a recovery so long after being on life-support machines does not bode well.

The report further said that the medical intention of an induced coma is to decrease the brain's need for oxygen to ease its workload and therefore give it time to recover, although the longer the coma is induced, the bleaker the chances become.

It was the fear of a brain haemorrhage, if Schumacher is awoken, which has made his medical team keep him under, with an expert saying that even if Schumacher wakes up, his memory could be 'wiped out'.

JACK DE MENEZES – 28 JANUARY 2014

The opening day off the Formula 1 season has seen further tributes and messages of support flood in for seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, with defending champion Sebastian Vettel admitting he remains in shock following the skiing accident that has left Schumacher in an induced coma.

The 45-year-old continues to fight for his life after suffering severe brain injuries when he hit his head on a rock while skiing off-piste in the French resort of Meribel.

The latest update from Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm said the former racing driver remains in a “stable but critical condition”, and it is not yet known whether the former Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes driver will survive the accident.

Michael Schumacher Prosecutors Confirm Investigation Findings

Vettel is gunning for his fifth consecutive Drivers’ World Championship this season, a feat that only Schumacher can boast following his unrivalled success with Ferrari during 2000 and 2004.

Speaking on the opening day of testing at Jerez in Spain, Vettel said: “I have known him for a long time and have been looking up to him all my life.

“I got to know him obviously when he did his comeback a little bit more and became his friend.

“It's horrible, especially for his family and close friends not knowing what's going to happen. In that regard, as I said, I'm still shocked as everyone and obviously I pray and hope a miracle will happen and he will come back and be the person he has always been before.”

Vettel was unable to get on-track on the first day of testing as his Red Bull RB10 remained in the garage, but one car that did get some running time was the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton. The German manufacturer, who staged Schumacher’s comeback from his original retirement in 2010 until 2012, are running their new W05sup with the message #KeepFightingSchumacher on it.

Hamilton’s day did come to a premature end though when his front wing failed and he crashed into the tyre barrier, sustaining significant damage to the front of his Mercedes that prevented any further action on the first of four days of testing.

Schumacher’s family have already expressed their gratitude at the support they have received from fans worldwide, including Bundesliga clubs Cologne FC and Schalke.
Aw such nice words from vettel, makes me hate him a little less.

..if it's possible for him to have any recovery, then he will have one, I'm sure of that, Eoin...

Iceman 29-01-2014 03:46 PM

I think we are beyond that stage now. I hope not but its just looking more and more unlikely.

Iceman 29-01-2014 05:41 PM

Doctors have begun the process of taking Michael out of his coma. :o

Drew. 29-01-2014 05:54 PM

Really? if true then this is both great and scary..

Iceman 29-01-2014 06:42 PM

French media reporting it. The same news outlet that broke the accident initially.

AnnieK 29-01-2014 06:43 PM

I wonder how long it will take...

Z 29-01-2014 06:59 PM

Oh that's a good sign surely!?

Iceman 29-01-2014 07:12 PM

Will most likely be 4-7 days. They will wean him off the medicine.

And yes a good sign definitely.

Ammi 29-01-2014 07:14 PM

..wow, that's great new..

..it is possible that he could make a recovery, Eoin....I know someone who did from a similar injury and although he had to make lots of adjustments in his life, there is still so much that he can do...

Drew. 29-01-2014 09:51 PM

I watched a documentary the other week called The Crash Reel based on a professional snowboarder who hit his head and ended up going into a coma and it follows his recovery, It's quite similar to this although Michael has spent longer in the coma a recovery still looks positive.

Niamh. 30-01-2014 11:03 AM

Hopefully it will go well for him and he makes a good recovery
