how many people are on food banks in this country, immigration will not improve are country, one bit, are leaders care more for outsiders than the people who are on low wages, and are paying bills that rise every day of the week, do you think middle class families would live next door to refugees, no, britain needs to look out for its own people, rather than making them pay high taxes to fund people to cross over into italy,

The problem comes when the posts become borderline (or actually racist)...and then we have to delete them, and then obviously other posts that quoted the deleted post, or posts that followed because without the offending post, the rest of it wouldn't make sense. When this happens, posts that otherwise are fine get deleted because without the deleted stuff it doesn't follow the discussion and would be confusing to people just reading the thread who hadn't seen all the hassle before deletion, if this makes sense.

Also we don't delete/ban/whatever simply because a post has been deleted, however, when one thread has a load of reports coming from it, from loads of different users, then you have a problem. Its obviously offending a lot of people with the direction its gone in, or the direction it was intended to go in.

In short, no threads like that aren't always going to be 'pruned'. And a great way to stop this happening (and I know this is hard, I have been known to reply to stuff I know I shouldn't before) is if you see a post that will obviously take the thread in the wrong direction or is outright offensive, completely ignore it (posting wise) and report it. This way when we deal with the report, if people have just ignored it, we wont have to delete huge chunks of conversation.

I do understand the reasoning, I know that other members less cut out for the trenches of the SD threads that really get kicking also have to be considered and not just us loudmouthes who get off on spikey debate :joker:.

However I can't really get on bored with the "ignore and report" philosophy. The whole point of debate is to try your damnedest to change people's opinions, especially if you find them ugly (the opinions, not the people :hehe: ) and you can't do that if you refuse to respond to those opinions. Even worse if they get deleted really - feeling shut down or "forced" to keep those opinions to themselves just makes people incredulous, righteous, and cements those opinions in them. Pushes them down to sit quietly and fester and become even more toxic.

Obviously not the forum's responsibility but it is why I'll most likely have to avoid certain threads I think. I can't see things and not reply, I'd probably implode or something :(. And I certainly won't be reporting anything. Ew.

Not true. I heard that in the lesser known "college years" sequel, she tapped out on Charlie Brown when they finally got down to it. "Because it's like a butternut squash".

Vicky. 24-04-2015 06:25 PM

I understand that completely. However thats why huge chunks of threads get deleted, as those with offensive views (or who put them across badly) are in effect 'taken on'..and then we see a post that needs deleted and we have to delete everything along those lines.

I don't really see it as wasted posts, as those who were originally involved in the convo, still had that convo...if that makes sense. Its a bit like having a debate in real life, it still happened even though theres no record of it. I don't know if I'm putting my point across well here, but I know what I mean

Honestly, if I was a member I don't think I could ignore and report either. So its probably much better for me that I was made a mod as early as I was and HAD to learn to do that...otherwise I would probably be banned more often than most

Now that's honest, I get where you're coming from thankyou for Explaining it. I'm still wary of making threads in SD now though as if it does go pear shaped and I report it runs a real risk of being closed, wiped I can deal with as you know the stance of a few but there's no room for the thread to progress as with something that is constantly being updated in the media if it's closed.
I thought I'd learnt not to bite too, I am better than I was you must admit  but at times...... gah!!!

There's not really much I can add tbh without repeating what Vicky, Nimah and Eoin has already said.

I completely understand how frustrating it can be if you have taken the time to be part of a debate, typed up long replies with your opinion then come back to find the thread removed, the thing is though, if we do get to the point where a thread needs closed (and we do try our best not to close them btw) and we do close it whilst leaving any argumentative/offending comments, we still tend to get reports over and over about them (yes even though the thread is closed) also as others have said (I think it was Ammi?) some members don't always have heated debates in here but they still read the threads and take part occasionally and when the threads are filled with the same people having the same aimed arguments like has been happening constantly lately hence the announcement about it at the top of this section it gets tedious for them to even read through and further deters them from taking part. (We have actually had reports and messages from members saying/complaining about this)

I know there was a thread the other day where some members were pissed off at comments being removed but they were removed as they were offensive or they were in reply to or quoting those posts, even though it's serious debates we still wont allow posts like that to remain, so to answer the question in the OP, no, threads wont get closed as soon as they become a little heated, but when comments that are discriminatory/offensive are being posted or members are sniping/baiting even after the thread has already been cleaned up with offending posts dealt with then yes that's when the threads will be closed/deleted, heated debate is perfectly fine but keeping the discussion civil and respectful is still expected otherwise the threads turn into a complete mess.

Kizzy...your thread was given plenty of chance, the thread was closed and cleaned, posts and members were dealt with yet still the sniping and numerous reports continued, making the debate redundant in our opinion.

Marsh. 24-04-2015 07:37 PM

Is bullying allowed in serious debates?

Kizzy 24-04-2015 07:42 PM

So what was the solution, ignore the sniping and wait for a mod to notice and close the thread or report it and get the thread closed straight away?
I sent you the posts, what should I have done in that instance, whatever happened the thread was going to be closed.
It sound a bit rich for people who aren't even involved in the debate to be reacting to it, I'm skitted at for reporting posts I'm directly involved with and yet there's a whole behind the scenes reporting culture of people who just oppose from afar :/

Ignore the posts yes because a mod wouldn't have closed the thread had the discussion been moving along as normal AND there would have been no reports.

The solution for us was the thread was at an end and was closed, you being partly to blame for that btw.

And no it isn't a bit rich for people not involved to report. If they want to take part in a thread and get to the most recent posts and see it's just the usual bickering it ruins the thread for them.

So you say ignore and vicky says report... :/

'if you see a post that will obviously take the thread in the wrong direction or is outright offensive, completely ignore it (posting wise) and report it.'

Yes I reported a post as I've been advised by you and others in the past, had I known it would get the thread closed I might not have done.
The thread was not at an end as the story is still ongoing and the bigotry that it uncovered in this forum is evident.
(by the FMs in that thread)

So basically if someone doesn't want to participate in a thread they can just sit there pressing report ad get it closed?

It wasn't just reports that got the thread closed Kizzy. And the people reporting certainly were NOT reporting and ignoring post wise were they?

The discussion was at an end in that thread for the exact reasons you have been told numerous times, you already have another similar thread.

And no that's not what I said at all about people reporting since someone 'just sitting there pressing report' would be spamming the report system.
