A lot of the two parters could have easily been crunched to an extended episode.

glibberglobber 06-08-2018 08:47 PM

I do agree that today's audience would be bored with the split parts.... but the only reason I would like it back is for the cliffhangers!

Stories like Bad Wolf and Parting of the Ways were completely fine split up...

How would you feel about 2 45-minute parts to a story (as used in Colin Baker's season)

We're lucky we don't get stories like The War Games or then I will fully quit watching!

haha,War Games has the same number of episodes as the entirety of the upcoming series!

I wonder what made people tune in to see Doc, Zoe, and Jamie constantly running between the same six or so sets...

Not watched it yet due to the length and its not on my bucket list. Currently watching The Time Monster.

Is that why everyone hates two-three parters in NuWho?

Because technically they're not three parters.

The first episode is its own story, it's just the conclusion of it directly affects/leads into the next episode.

Utopia and Turn Left are standalone stories really. The cliffhangers just lead directly into the two-parter. They aren't really one story spanning 2 1/4 hours of screen time over 3 weeks.

Doctor Who became a bore after S8!

We need more medieval themed stories!

I'm reminded of The Girl Who Died and I'm bored.

It seems you have stories and episodes mixed up :hehe:

I think you mean

"10-13 stories a year"

or

"5 -6 stories a year"

Surely a 45 minute space for a story, titles and credits is a bit rushed?

Whereas a 22- 25 minute space for part of a story, titles, a cliffhanger and credits each Saturday teatime is much better?

isn't a show like DW meant to keep you on your toes each week, making you look forward to the next episode - will the doctor die? Is that a Dalek shadow he saw?

The only thing that keeps New Who fans on their toes is the Next Time trailer which gives most of the story away :p

25 minutes wouldn't work anymore.

The episodes would still have to work as individual parts and 25 minutes isn't enough to engage the audience in the story before then pausing to pick up again next week. Time's have changed.

I'm talking about more of a Merlin type story... Magic, yet at the same time it still ties in the historical knowledge that younger viewers could learn...

It wasn't even medieval but "The Reign of Terror" from the 60's taught viewers a lot about the French Revolution..

Robots of Sherwood was a GREAT story as was The Time Warrior

if you want more stories like "Smile" go ahead :hehe:

Oliver_W 07-08-2018 08:51 AM

The Aztecs was pretty engaging, and you could learn from it too!

imo Clara was pretty in her first season (it would of been 100x better if victorian Clara was the main clara). But yeah I grew to really like Clara when Capaldi came thru because their chemistry worked so well

I would love for them to travel to different time periods around the world. like take us to ancient Egypt, china, Mesopotamia, precolonial Africa... Theres so much interesting places all around the world and mysteries in history they could go to and for some reason we're always taken back to bloody Victorian London (or Yorkshire :skull:).

One 90 minute episode instead then?

This is what I thought The Magician's Apprentice / The Witch's Familiar was going to be

Oliver_W 07-08-2018 09:56 AM

I wonder if the Classic dvd releases should have an "all in one" edit. It should be optional so people can watch them episodically, but a version where it all plays out would be more watchable to modern audiences, and maybe even broadcastable (obviously not primetime though)

We got Medieval China from Marco Polo (but it's all missing!)
